It's Not About the Truth: The Untold Story of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case and the Lives It Shattered, by Don Yaeger

From Publishers Weekly

In the early hours of March 14, 2006, a group of Duke University lacrosse players got in an altercation with two strippers they hired for a party; afterwards, one of the strippers placed a call to 911 that set off a campus-shaking rape case that would captivate the national media. A number of parties, including District Attorney Mike Nifong, lined up to characterize the defendants as "a bunch of hooligans" before charges against the three indicted players were finally dropped, half a year later. In this riveting book, sports author Yaeger (Turning the Tide) and Mike Pressler, then-head coach of the Duke lacrosse team, present a fast-moving account of the 13 months that tore apart the university and the town. Looking at all aspects of the case, including Durham's troubled racial history and profiles of the Nifong and Duke president Richard Brodhead, Pressler and Yaeger find plenty of blame to spread around-including the "self-perpetuating monster" of media coverage, the university administration that took "some of the worst actions...against the Duke lacrosse team"-but Pressler, the tale's sacrificial lamb, avoids a bitter or accusatory stance. Instead he adds color and insight to Yaeger's rigorous, efficient investigation; for anyone who got caught up in the story, this is a must-read. On March 14, 2006, in Durham, North Carolina, police were called to the Kroeger shopping center to find a black prostitute passed out in the front seat of someone's car. She had no ID and was babbling incoherently. Then and there, the police made the decision to take her to the town's drunk tank. Upon arrival, however, the prostitute freaked. What no one knew until much later was that a few months earlier, the prostitute had been confined to a mental hospital by her own family and only released with the warning to never take drugs or alcohol again - if she did, the mental authorities threatened, she would be incarcerated for a much longer period and her two children taken away. Thus, on the morning March 14, 2006, when Crystal Gayle Mangum arrived at Durham's drunk tank, she desperately needed an explanation for her bizarre behavior. That was when Crystal claimed she'd been gang raped. The lie worked and Crystal was removed from the drunk tank and instead taken to the Duke hospital. Once there, she admitted her lie. But by then it was too late. Vengeful cops, prejudiced nurses and - worst of all - a corrupt DA losing an election race had already taken over Crystal's lie for their own purposes and within days a hooker's lie would become a nightmare trapping the entire Duke lacrosse team, their families - but most of all their beloved coach, Pressler.Pressler knew his players were innocent - knew no rape had ever happened. But the police and media refused to believe him. Neither did Duke University. In fact, 88 Duke professors instantly joined the cops, nurses and DA Nifong to turn like wolves on the innocent players, aided by the howling media loving the whole fake scandal. As a result, Duke University fired the decent and honorable Coach Pressler. It would be nearly a year - on April 11, 2007 - before the NC Attorney General would declare the truth Pressler had stated all along. That the players were innocent and no rape had ever occurred. This book describes Pressler's nightmare and that of his players. It is a heartbreaking, yet honest, tale of greed, lies and corruption gone wild in a small town in the south - and of the innocent people caught up in it. Yaeger is a master at story telling - and the tale of Pressler's courage and suffering is heart breaking. This book reads like the 'DaVinci Code' - once you start, you will not be able to put it down. Each chapter seems to have a stunning surprise that leads into the next. I read it in nearly one sitting - and most of my friends did the same. It is a gripping read!"It's Not About the Truth" is - sadly - EXACTLY about the truth!BUY this book!!!!!

Even though I had followed the case at the time, I still read this in two nights flat - it's that good. This is an important book, heck it's an important story, particularly for "white people". I write that with hesitation, but heck that's the truth. How come "white" has almost become a term of abuse? "White boy" certainly has. And that's just it. They only reason this tall tale, this ridiculous hoax, went this far, affected so many lives, pushed so many people to the edge of their existence (could you post a $400, 000 bond for your son, whilst your wife is having a nervous breakdown) is that these were "white boys". Thus it was open season. Read with horror as these boys, because of making one mistake, one error of judgement, inviting a stripper to perform a private function in their home, lost their coach, their season, their house (many slept in their cars), were hounded off campus or formally expelled, threatened both verbally and by mail - all this after fully cooperating with the police, turning over all the physical evidence in their house without question, voluntarily took DNA tests - and it still took months and months, hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps millions (the lawyer fees of the indicted three estimated at $100,000 a month), an extraordinary display of loyalty and togetherness between their teamates, their relatives and neighbors and some great lawyers (their lawyers are to me, all heroes - one, Kirk Osborn, sadly died of a heart attack during the ordeal) to finally shake off the blatantly false allegation of a mentally unstable criminal supported by a madman whose daytime job was District Attorney. So we both cheer when they are finally vindicated by then wonder - is America crazy right now or what? What is this war on "white men" by the feminists, the race hustlers, the homosexuals, the Latinos and everybody else. I remember reading a post on a blog after this arose from a white male: "All the more reason just to keep your head down, get your sh** done in the daytime, and retire for the evening behind a locked door" - this is the reality for countless "privileged white males" in many parts of America today.I couldn't recommend this book highly enough. If you have teenage sons or daughters preparing to go to college, they need to read this book.
