I am a certified High School Physics and Math teacher. I was charged with the task of developing an Introduction to Engineering Class for high school students. Needless to say there are no well established textbooks dealing with this subject at this level. I decided to read this book, in an effort to help me decide the best way to proceed.First and foremost, I noticed that my philosophy of education was simpatico with Richard Felder who is a Chemical Engineer. He emphasizes the importance of interacting with your students, as you work through any lesson. Entirely too many science and math teachers out there, do not adopt this practice and it is the cause of most consternation amongst students who take math and science class. The teacher assumes that because they presented something, it was automatically taught. Students need to be given tasks throughout a given lecture, so that they can see how much they truly understand.As for my Engineering Class, the most useful information that I received was the idea of conveying to students the importance of working effectively as a team. To give students a glimpse of what it is like to function, as an engineer, they have to work on projects, as members of a team. As teachers we all dread the hassle of giving students group projects and the ensuing complaints that arise.“Johnny’s not doing his fair share of the work.”“Johnny’s taking over and bossing everybody around.”“I don’t want to work with Johnny, I want to work with somebody else.”The book does an excellent job of dealing with these scenarios. It stresses that the real world isn’t about getting A’s on tests and projects. It is about whether or not the team is successful and whether or not, they accomplish their goal. In my Engineering class with my students I emphasized this early on. Chapter 11, which deals with how to form effective teams was extremely helpful. I formed teams at the beginning of the year. I used many of the book’s concepts with the plan of re-evaluating teams,a the year progressed, but it wasn’t necessary. Throughout the year, all of my students internalized the team concept and were always working for the success of the team and not worrying about individual grades. Throughout all of their projects, different team members worked on different aspects of the same project and appeared to get along well throughout.These concepts were thoroughly stressed throughout the book, and so it became an important focus for me throughout my class.For anyone who is teaching Science or math, computer programming or any type of engineering course, I would highly recommend reading this book, before proceeding.

This book is a treasure and legacy from the authors to the STEM faculty community! If it had been written before, decades of tears, frustrations and disillusionment of students and professors would have been saved. I will make sure everybody I come across in my workshops/seminars/speeches will learn about this precious resource to make them more effective and efficient in their teaching, and will suggest that my hosts get copies for the participants to ensure they can continue to explore and apply the valuable suggestions in it.”

If you liked How Learning Works or Make it Stick, this books goes one step further and provides useful tips and practical suggestions for beginning and/or experienced instructors in STEM disciplines. The book is full of ideas that one can begin to use them immediately in small or large class sizes. The goal of the book is to get students actively engaged in the classroom than passively listening to a lecture. Of the two previous books mentioned, this one is my favorite.

Great resource! Felder and Brent have collected up all the wonderful ideas from their wealth of publications and then some to create this book. Both beginning and veteran faculty can find much of use in this volume. The authors have skillfully combined a step-by-step how-to guide in many instances with readable compilations of the latest research on human learning. Any science or engineering instructor would benefit from having this book on their shelves.

They’re terrorists, or they’re going to nuke Israel are the most common responses. Many people are aware of the instability but vary rarely can anyone tell you why. This book “The Twilight War,” by David Crist, gives an extremely thorough and well researched history of the Iranian US conflict from the revolution to today.　　　David Crist, is the son of CENTCOM Commander George Crist who oversaw middle eastern forces throughout the 1980’s. This gives Crist a unique and rare perspective and access to information not typically available to the average citizen. It is evident that his research was extremely vast and painstakingly detailed. My anticipation for this book was to gain insight from a completely American perspective, I was not disappointed. Crist provided a play by play of nearly every event that occurred post revolution and the perception of events from an American military standpoint. His work shed light on many different examples of Iranian instigation and disruption throughout the middle east and how those antagonisms effected the US military. Including an assassination attempt in Washington of a Saudi Ambassador.　　　Although Crist did not hold back in his work and offered many examples of times when America was at fault in the political antagonism, this book is indeed written from a skewed perspective. Crist began his historical account primarily at the time of the revolution and went into great detail as to what happened, but he failed in explaining why the events occurred. To truly understand the American/Iranian conflict you must have a thorough grasp on Iranian culture and history and why the revolution had as much to do about America and Europe than it did about Islam and Anti-zionism.　　　Although the perspective is one sided, the author reports facts accurately, descriptively, and leaves out personal bias and opinion. This did not read like a propaganda piece, but more of a dry recitation of information. If you are looking to get a detailed and honest record of the history between Iran and the US for the passed 30 years, this is a great resource. To fully understand why the Iranian and US relations are in their current state, I would encourage you to find more resources.

I just finished reading Crist's history and was impressed, primarily at Crist's obviously earnest effort at "objectivity." He chronicles clearly the US and Iran, taking turns, one after the other, in missing opportunities for a reconciliation, with the resultant impenetrable distrust at the end of 30 years. His work, published in 2012, is not optimistic; he sees the future as most likely a transition from twilight to darkness, by which he clearly means a massively destructive war.I was surprised at the intensity of the criticism of Crist's work for supposedly shoddy sourcing, to the point of challenging endnotes. The one thing that seems clear is that Crist had extraordinary access to resources, both human and archival. The lead criticism, based on endnotes, focuses on Crist "detailed" description of the 1983 bombing of the marine barracks in Beirut, which supposedly fails to mention the doubt about the bombers' identity. But Crist's own rendition of the events at p. 135 merely describes as "likely" the man identified as the attacker; Crist's endnote expands on the uncertainty by reciting the alternative theories put forth by American intelligence reports in 1984, Hezbollah sources in 2003, and CIA sources, all of which he describes as underscoring the unclear identity of the perpetrator.Again, the criticism of Crist's discussion of Iranian penetration of Iraqi militias, is it's "complete certitude" and purported attribution to a 2008 West Point study, which the reviewer states "does not support" Crist's account. However, endnote 7 to Chap 26 at p. 620 does not, as the critic suggests, attribute the narrative to the West Point study; it merely cites the study as "an accurate and comprehensive overview of Iranians activities in Iraq." As to certitude, maybe Crist's narrative is more confident for having access to Wikileaks' 2011 release of internal US communications, obviously not available to the West Point authors at the time of their 2008 publication. After all, no one ever criticized Wikileaks for inaccuracy.Finally, if the book ended at p. 415, as suggested, we'd miss the entire George W. Bush and partial Obama era histories through 2012. They are critical to the broad narrative that Crist portrays of administrations, both Republican and Democrat, missing opportunities for reconciliation at critical moments....and the Iranians copying the errors of their American counterparts. Nothing in the endnote attacks undermines the utility of those chapters for that purpose.

I buy this anthology almost every year. I understand that the editors choice reflects the editor but this was the first one that seems to discount the quality of the stories for the inherent political social cultural emphasis of the works. These are not particularly well written stories. These are not particularly compelling stories. These stories have one or two clear overlapping agendas which are obvious and sadly bend the word “best” into something with a very different, very 2018 meaning. What should be an anthology about writing is in fact about something else entirely. I hope next year’s edition is less about persons and personalities and more about good writing.

I read this anthology every year. Yes, as other customers have pointed out, Roxane Gay's point of view is reflected in her choice of stories, but I feel strongly that this *adds* a dimension, not detracts or subtracts! We had decades of stories about the white (often wealthy) experience, with a few notable exceptions. Then Junot Diaz in 2017 and Roxane Gay in 2018 expanded the diversity of this series and opened us to new authors, characters, themes, backgrounds, experiences. In my view, the quality has not suffered. These are excellent stories, many of them electric and memorable.

I tried to give this anthology a chance after barely making it through the Introduction but finally gave up. If you want to read politically charged fiction then you may enjoy this but I read fiction to escape, not to be lectured to.

As a short story writer, I really enjoy this anthology series, from both a reader's and writer's perspective. But BASS 2018? This is my favorite year by far. Roxane Gay doesn't choose stories based on the magazine they are published in. There's even a piece or two of genre fiction (weeks later, I am still haunted by The Brothers Brujo. That first paragraph. THAT FIRST PARAGRAPH. It should be taught in every writing class about how to write a first paragraph.)I'm not surprised by some of the commentary I've read about the anthology. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. I've read reviews centering on how people don't think these stories deserve the title "best of" because they are too political, because they are not written like other good short stories are, because they sound different, and, of course, because 'the only reason these stories were chosen was because Roxane Gay wanted to choose political stories.'Here is what I say to those readers: being political and being good are NOT mutually exclusive. And, furthermore: most of these stories aren't overtly political. Having diverse characters does not equal a polemic against the current administration.This is the first of the "Best of" series where I wasn't completely overwhelmed by the male, able-bodied WASPiness of it all. BASS 2018 is not about what IS traditionally considered "good" literary fiction. It is about what SHOULD be considered good literary fiction. It is about stories and voices that are glorious and beautiful but have been overlooked again and again by literature as a collective. The stories here experiment with structure, with voice, with point of view and with subject matter.Most of the time, I end up enjoying between 1/3 and 1/2 of the stories per BASS collection.This year, I enjoyed all but two or three, and that was mostly because they just weren't the style I enjoy reading – stepping back as a reader, from a craft standpoint they were quite strong.I strongly encourage readers and writers alike to pick up this anthology. It is perfect for teaching craft, and showcases a variety of voices and POVs: great for classrooms with a wide range of writerly sensibilities.

I had trouble getting through some of the stories. A Big True was particularly disappointing. And the other Stories were not up to the standards of previous years which I loved.

Singh (Berkeley, California)HEIDI PITLOR, the editor of the series, states in her Foreword (page xi): “In last year’s foreword, I wrote about my reaction to the 2016 presidential election. I received a few letters requesting that I keep politics out of my job…. As George Orwell wrote in a 1946 essay, ‘The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.’ ” I fully agree with Pitlor. She is also the editor of the excellent anthology "100 Years of the Best American Short Stories", which she co-edited with Lorrie Moore. (For a fuller understanding of Pitlor's contributions, see my review of the book on amazon.)The 2018 book comprises twenty short stories; I'll review three.JOCELYN NICOLE JOHNSON’s short story “Control Negro,” published in Guernica, is an 11-page letter by an African-American professor, in his sixties, to his 21-year old biological son, with whom he had never talked face to face, but supported him financially by giving money to his mother married to another. This is not a story of adultery. The married couple had failed to have a child because of a lack in the husband. The mother, an African-American graduate student, made a consensual arrangement of impregnation while remaining married. At the opening of the story in media res, the biological father is a professor of history, the mother a professor of environmental studies, the son an undergrad -- all three at the same esteemed university.The letter begins (page 167): “By the time you read this, you may have figured it out. Perhaps your mother told you, though she was privy to my timeworn thesis – never my aim or full intention. Still, maybe the truth of it breached your insides: That I am your father, that you are my son. In these typewritten pages, I mean to make manifest the truth, the whole. But please do not mistake this letter for some manner of veiled confession. I cannot afford to be sorry, not for any of it. I hope you’ll come to understand, it was all for a grander good.“You see, I needed a Control Negro, grotesque as that may sound –“You should know I was there on the day you were born, a reflection behind the nursery glass. I laid eyes on you while your mother rested, along with her husband – that man you must have accepted, at least for a time, as your father. You seemed to see me too, my blurred silhouette.”In the letter, Professor Cornelius Adams narrates the assaults and humiliations he had suffered such as at age ten being beaten almost to death by three drunken white young men for no reason other than his being black (page 174). At his job as a professor, being handed among student submissions a cartoon titled “Irony,” by an anonymous student as “a history professor leaned over a lectern, looking quite like me – same jacket and bow tie – except with something primitive about his face. A thought bubble hovered over the room of students: ‘Darwin Taught to Men by an Ape.’ ” The term “Control” in the story title is standard in social anthropology/psychology experiments as evidence of valid comparisons. Is the hostile behavior of American Caucasian Males (ACMs) toward African Americans because of color or of class and cultural differences? Would a “Control Negro” child raised as a middle-class American and attending an esteemed college be subjected to hostility by ACMs?At the climax of the story, Professor Adams observed (page 177) “wasted students partying on the strip of college bars. I knew this because I’d worked late that night, the first warm evening of spring. I’d decided to walk home through the carnival of youth, and only by chance spotted you out front of that bar on the corner. You were right there in the fray of students, half swaying to music that spilled from an open patio.Surprise: “I must tell you now that it was I the one who called the precinct, claiming to have seen a ‘suspicious young man’ at the corner of University and Second. I called but did not specify your height, your color….Son, please believe me if you believe nothing else I’ve written: this was a test for them – for the world!—not for you.”No Surprise: The police promptly arrested the black youth, his son, “who seemed dangerous” to them; “pinned him to the pavement,” blood flowing.Remorse: After seeing his son participate in a student protest on campus, the narrator expresses his remorse in the closing paragraph of his letter: “When I saw you, I knew that you would recover, and it felt like I could breathe again for the first time in a very long while. …Look at all you’ve accomplished, in spite of everything. You made it here, just like they did.”------------CRISTINA HENRÎQUEZ’s short story “Everything Is Far from Here,” published in The New Yorker, is about a Latina group with children crossing the border into Texas.During the journey, the unnamed main character was forcibly separated from her 5-years’ old son. “The man who was leading them here divided the group. Twelve people drew too much attention, he claimed. He had sectioned off the women, silencing any protest with the back of his hand, swift to the jaw. ‘Do you want to get there or not?’ They did. ‘Trust me,’ he said.” (page 149)She had left her country after her husband was killed and she was raped by a gang of young boys – “boys whose mothers she knew from the neighborhood.” As an asylum seeker, she is interviewed by a lawyer, who asks, “Why do you think they targeted you?” She replies, “I was alone.”The poignant anxiety she suffers from the separation from her son is the central theme of the story. Using the third-person close Point of View, the narrator succeeds in evoking this reader’s empathy.At night, missing her son, she sometimes screams. Then “the guards come to restrain her. They hold her arms behind her back. They drag her down the hall and put her in a room, a colorless box with spiders in the corners, until she calms down.” (page 153)“One day, when the air is damp and the sky is mottled and gray, there’s a protest. People outside hold signs that say ILLEGAL IS A CRIME and SEND THEM BACK WITH BIRTH CONTROL. People hold American flags over their shoulders like cape. Superhero Americans. She imagines them at home … laying the poster board on the floor, uncapping markers, drawing the letters, coloring them in.” (pages 153- 54)Daily she sits by the front door waiting for her son. One day, she sees a five-year old boy among the crowd. “His dark, combed hair, the freckle beneath his eye. God in Heaven! It’s him! She lunges forward and wrests him from the crowd. She falls to her knees and pulls him into her arms.” (p 155)Alas, he is not her son, just a look-alike. The boy’s real mother snatches him away.As foreshadowed in the title “Everything Is Far from Here,” she accepts her situation. “She will stay in this place, she tells herself, until he comes."ESMÈ WEIJUN WANG’s short story “What Terrible Thing It Was,” published in Granta, is told by a paranoid narrator, whose psychosis worsens by the 2016 right-wing election victory and what that portends for minorities such as East-Asians like her.The story opens with the first-person narrator, Wendy Chung, hearing the voice of Becky Mei-Hua Guo, a friend of hers, who had been murdered and hung high up a eucalyptus tree in Polk Valley where they lived. Wendy was seventeen at that time. Throughout the story Wendy hears Becky’s voice. “If she had not been killed in part because of her race, I could, as the saying goes, breathe easier, but I could not assure myself of that any more than I could wipe off my own face.” (page 293)Wendy goes to the Wellbrook Psychiatric Hospital for a consult. Dr. Richards recommends ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) for her schizophrenia and depression. Wendy says she wants to first talk about this with her husband, Dennis, a good-natured white man. On the bus ride back to Polk Valley, Wendy looks at Twitter to learn how the election is going. “I look briefly at Twitter and see that the man I am afraid will become president has insinuated that it would be best if his supporters harassed people at the polls, particularly people of color; of course, he never says ‘people of color,’ but we know what he means. I click on the tweet and scroll down: ‘Muslim Obama HATES America, LOVES terrerists!’ ” (pages 296-97)Wendy’s regression to her earlier trauma by the 2016 election result is suggested in the last paragraph: “In the bathroom where I avoid looking in the mirror – an aversion to my own face is one of my latest symptoms….I stand at the sink for a long time, until I cannot remember what I am doing; I lose the next move. I loved this collection. I was looking for a book that would take a lot of time to read. I am a voracious reader, and I was getting tired of constantly having to buy new books. This collection was the answer to my prayers. I am reading it on my keyboard Kindle; I've read about two and half books and haven't even gotten to 10%. Zane Grey is a magnificent author. At first, it seems that he can just go on and on about a scenery, but his actions sequences are quite captivating. He makes you care immensely about each character: sad when bad things happen to good people and happy when bad guys bite the dust. I highly recommend this to any person who wants to have a lot of books for a cheap price!

I had never read Zane Grey before, but I have really enjoyed each of these selections that are included in this collection. I had stopped reading fiction quite a number of years ago, but in the recent past, I decided to get back to the escape that is found in a well written old western. This collection is so good, I am now looking to purchase the "turn the real pages" book form.

I am only half way through the 49 stories, but I just love all of them, so far. They are interesting, colorful, romantic and mostly take place in AZ, UT, CO and NV at the turn of the 20th century. The geographic descriptions are terrific. The characters are engaging. The stories are simple yet impactful. I have given up TV to read these stories every night. Any one who loves stories of the old West will love these stories.

Great romantic novels; the Classic Rainbow Trail and Riders of the Purple Sage will stand against any; the descriptions of natural environments and features are beautiful and make you glad to be in the world, even if your surroundings don't inspire. The best of these novels have a haunting melancholy from time to time, and inspire thoughts on the nature of existence, but all are good yarns and entertain in diverse ways.

If you enjoy early American frontier stories (based on the lives of actual pioneers and "border men"---some were ancestors of Zane Grey), this is your collection. If you enjoy Western stories: the cowboys, the Texas Rangers, the gun fighters the railroad builders, the gamblers, the mountain men, this is your collection. If you would enjoy stories about the lives of our Native Americans, both eastern woodland and western plains and desert ---you will want this collection! Above all, Grey had an absolute gift for painting with words, the colors, the sounds, the fragrance of the desert, the canyons, the forests and mountains. His description of the Grand Canyon at sunset in several of these stories is unbelievable! If you absolutely love baseball, as it was played in the straw hat days of our country, this is your collection! Zane Grey knew baseball inside and out, and crafted a large assortment of romantic and heartwarming fictional stories about the bush leagues, and the major leagues. If you can imagine reading a gripping tale about a young wheat farmer during WW1 fighting to save his crops from German funded sabotage, then enlisting to fight in the trenches, this is your collection! Zane Grey manages to weave a beautiful love story or two into each of these novels---These are the human love stories, the elements that other "western" writers never touched on to this extent. I think women would love this collection as much as the men do! I took it along on vacation, and honestly hoped for rain---it went to the beach, the car, everywhere I could steal a chance to read. Two months on vacation and I am still finding excuses to sit down and read!

I like this collection because it takes me back to my childhood, when things were more simple, less demanding. They are just good western stories. Reading them takes me to a place when TV was black and white, less gore was ok, and good guys usually won. Zane Grey tells good stories and let's you climb into them. And you sure can't beat the price!

If you like westerns and adventure of a contemporary nature of his time, you will love these stories. The fiction is developed from his own experiences an tales heard firsthand of the west. He also writes about his own adventures deep sea fishing at the Channel Islands of California, Also, he writes about hunting, packing and camping in Mexico and Arizona.

A collection of 49 of Zane Grey's books, some are excellent, others less compelling. My husband and I have been reading them together. In any case, even the occasional slower paced one has been enough to keep going. His characters are vivid and reflect the prejudices of the day. His description is so clear you can see it, smell it, almost taste it. We've loved them.

Evan and Carrie Ann knew each other as children as Evan is her best friends older brother. As She gets back to Baton Rouge, she literally runs into him. As things go along they realize there is a chemistry between them, things happen and a little surprise makes itself known. There are a few bumps along the road such as an ex that won't take no for an answer. In the end all works out.

I loved this book and I loved the plot and I really enjoyed the ending. I could not put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to others to enjoy as much as I didI received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really enjoyed reading this book! One serious and has a life plan. And one with a devil may care attitude. They’ve known each other since childhood but were never together. They re -meet and good and bad things start to happen.

Whew what a great love in bestie brother story!! When Carrie Ann returns to town she’s dating the guy she’s known forever Timothy but her best friends brother intrigues her and she wants different! Will sparks fly!

This book shows us that Richard McKinley is a wonderful Pastel painter. But that was about all it does. "Top 100 Secrets" are still secret. It is just a come on to sign you up for their are course. Save your Yankee Dollars for something a little more informative.

I just got into pastel, had pastel pencils and mainly draw with all mediums. Into graphite, carbon, colour pencils mainly trying to do realism, but once I picked up a pastel pencils really loved the ability to create unusual drawings. Then got a cheap sample box of pastel blocks and wanted to learn how to use them.The pastel art that I do is more of a mixed media or I really like to do semi abstract work. This book was perfect for the style I want to learn for mixed media works and only pastel works. Just bought a set of Derwent pastel stick and waiting to get them, said they were harder than the usual soft pastels which are very powdery and messy, and the Derwents can also be used for fine detail work. I love this book and the style and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about pastel drawing.

This is another "how to" book on pastel painting organized into chapters with a few additions and variations that make it a worthwhile purchase. For example, most technique books have an obligatory chapter on materials where the author discusses his preferences on pastels and supports. McKinley doesn't go there, but does include a nice piece on making your own supports rather than buying any number of pre made papers or boards. It should be noted this author has a signature selection of landscape pastels available from Great American Pastels but, to his credit, doesn't tout that particular brand. Instead he speaks briefly on the qualities he's looking for in developing his palette and encourages the reader/student to try many different brands to develop preferences. Also included is a rudimentary DVD (27+ min.) showing some basic steps in developing an under painting which will undoubtedly be useful to many who purchase the book. It should be noted that while this is a plus it's also a bit of advertising for other North Light/McKinley products as this author and his publisher have a couple DVD titles that I'm sure they'd be pleased for you to purchase.The bulk of the book covers basic drafting issues (focal point, rule of thirds, value, aerial perspective, etc.) and specific techniques involved with the pastel medium (under painting, strokes, surface texture). Filling the balance are sections on plein air painting, sketching, framing, air travel, and shipping of completed paintings. It should be noted the book covers a lot of ground not mentioned in other pastel guides and is well illustrated with the author's work as well as relevant photos of products or processes discussed in each section. As I understand it all of this material comes from the author's blog/web site and makes the book more a hodgepodge of topics rather than a progressive art instructional. While this allows a lot of random information to be included it doesn't allow for much basic pastel instruction (no step by step demos) which is why, I suppose, it's called "Pastel Pointers" rather than something more specific to pastel painting. I'll leave it for someone else to determine if there's "100 secrets" in the book as I don't know where amazon came up with that title; my copy is just labeled "Pastel Pointers: Top Secrets for Beautiful Pastel Paintings". Regardless, from a purely informational standpoint it's recommended and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is discussed in the following paragraph.While his paintings have an attractive atmospheric quality to them I feel they also have a generic sameness that becomes a bit predictable page after page. He seems to paint the same light conditions in every scene and has a signature palette incorporating violet highlights in his panels. If you've ever seen a gallery full of Thomas Kinkade prints you'll know what I mean. This is not a comment on artistic merit, rather just my preference in art. If you admire his style and technique which relies upon a significant under painting, then he would be a fine painter to emulate, though I personally prefer the work of Richard McDaniel. McDaniel has several books out, also has a signature selection of Great American Pastels and, like McKinley, comes from a drawing/oil painting background. I might suggest that you get a copy of "Landscape" (first choice) or "On Location" by Richard McDaniel and compare it with McKinley's work to gauge which artist you feel more comfortable with.

A large fraction of this book has almost nothing to say about pastel painting technqiues, being instead about the art business. There's even a section on listening to music while you work, and a section on doing your income taxes.On pastel painting itself, there is a lot about materials and staying organized, perhaps less about the painting process. I found the information about preparing surfaces, thumbnails, underpainting, value, color, and atmospheric perspective, to be interesting, as well as some information about how to deal with common problems.What frustrated me about this book was that I found it to be overly specific about some things and overly general about others, with relatively little real useful information, which had to be searched for by reading the rest. For example, the author tells you what size he breaks his pastel sticks into and how he grips a piece of pastel in his fingers--something which is quite personal and not likely to be of use to anybody who is not a total beginner. But about actual pastel strokes he is very general, showing you only that you can swipe, hatch, or crosshatch. These strokes are not demonstrated in any kind of painting--not even a simple one. They are simply shown in blocks of color out of any context. He speaks of the overall importance of edges to giving your work a natural, three-dimensional quality, but he doesn't really talk about when, why, or how to blend edges. He goes into significant detail on how to make greens look natural in a landscape painting--something quite specific and relatively advanced. Then he talks about value and color harmony in general terms (which is nonetheless interesting and I found useful). But he never quite seems to find that sweet spot of actual techniques and approaches. It's not a book for beginners, though there are parts of it that seems aimed at the total neophyte (how to hold your pastel). For an intermediate level pastel enthusiast there is some interesting information, but sections that deal with things like your first gallery show aren't helpful. But for an artist who is ready to think about art shows, most of the material in here is probably hopelessly basic and general.As to the writing style, I found it a bit wordy in most places, which is all the more frustrating when you find yourself searching for the next bit of useful information.For me the DVD wouldn't play--at least not in my PC.Overall, there was enough of value in this book to make it worth reading, but the experience of reading it was frustrating.

This is an excellent book for artists who have worked with pastels.It covers a wide range of topics, from basic techniques, to framing for galleries. It is a book to dip into when you need to try something new, need inspiration, or just wonder how to achieve a goal. Richard is a great educator and he does a great job of sharing his wealth of knowledge in a readable way.I've loved reading the book and expect to be dipping back into it on a regular basis.

If you want to really learn about pastel this book is a must !!! Not only for beginners but for everyone who wants to go to another level with their paintings! It is well thought out and written ! Richard McKinley is amazing.
