At first I did not take this book seriously. The author uses waaay too many puns and spends too much time developing analogies for simple concepts that are clear enough already. But after a while, I learned to ignore this stuff and found there is really quote a lot of meat here.The book starts with very basic particle physics, optics and refraction with a focus for how these topics control and modify passing EM waves. It then applies these to the rarified plasma that makes up the ionosphere. Also covered is the effects of ground on propagation and goes into how this all relates to antenna performance. Finally, I think the last few chapters are the best, where the book discusses questions that are still open and potential areas of further research.So if you don't get distracted, this book has lots of good info and ideas for experimentation.

I got interested in the DX hobby, and intend to extend to Amateur Radio and Amateur Astronomy. Based on that I bought some books and this was one of them. If your interest is in any of the three topics above or are curious in this aspect physics, you will not regret buying this book. Reasons are:1 - Language - The author has the skill of depicting technical topics in a very easy to understand and informal way, nevertheless I finished the book with a clear picture of the processes involved.2 - Crescendo - I like the style of starting with something we are familiar (light) and then building on that to explain the other topics. This requires a bit of understanding in physics, particularly polarization. You will need that concept, but chances are that if you heard of that, you did it for light in whatever physics classes you took.3 - Coverage - I figured out that radio propagation is a vast field. The author tackles many concepts in a concise way, but it provides links on concepts you want to expand.On the improvement side, I think some graphs need to be a bit bigger, like the Ionograms (I bought the kindle version of the book), but then jump on Google and you will get the graphs and axis you need to read.Overall great reading. Good job.

This title provides the amateur radio enthusiast with a macro and micro view or wave propagation. At times, this text is dry and contains some filler content to review past material but the text is full of great material and explanation of propagation, the ionosphere and how to instructions. Highly recommended and worth your money.

This is an excellent book. It is written in an informal style (appropriate to its intended Radio Amateur "Ham" audience), Although lacking in a formal academic style, the text is clear and easy to read. I found no technical errors and found the book to be easy to read, although for a non professional reader, there are sections which the reader will want to read several times over.The scope of the book is surprisingly wide, covering a broad topic with delightful completeness. Whether a reader is interested in completeness or in a quick review of radio wave propagation science, this book should satisfy.There is much more to the science of world wide radio signal propagation than a casual observer might suspect, and this book does an excellent job.This reviewer was one of the original designers of the "Topside Sounder", the first satellite ionosounder to probe the upper side of the ionosphere, and is proud to have made a contribution to ionospheric physics; this book brought back many vivid memories, some of them sad because they relate to friends and coworkers who are no longer with us ...

Extremely informative yet easy to read. I am am new HAM and this is such technical topic that it's easy to get lost. However this book breaks the concepts and topics down very well. I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn more about propagation for their HAM radio hobby.

This is not a book for someone brand new to radio. But you also don't have to have a degree in Electrical Engineering to understand it either. It is for tbe person that wants to understand what radio waves do and why. If you are the person that does self study...this is for you. Love it..

Beautifully written and illustrated. Like a wonderful meal, this book should be savoured slowly and shared with friends. One again Henri Nouwen breaks open the Gospels, strengthens our Catholic faith, and helps us see beyond our own brokenness. In addition to being a wonderful and contemplative read, the book itself is beautiful and would make an excellent gift.

I love that Henri wrote this for himself in the sense that he really wanted to write it for his own reasons and not because somebody else wanted him to write another book. To hear the depth of understanding and appreciation from someone who lived a eucharistic life is priceless. I'm experiencing a new depth of appreciation for the sacrament that is most personal to Jesus. Everyone I show this book to wants a copy. I highly recommend it.

Henri Nouwen explains the Lord's Supper in the context of the two disciples' walk with Jesus down the road to Emmaus at the end of Luke's gospel. He sees five interrelating movements in the celebration of the Lord's Supper, each movement corresponding to an event along the disciples' walk. This is a meditation, not a theological treatise, so the soul and the mind share the road. Nouwen's meditations are challenging and joyous, and this is one of the best I've read. Going on any trip with Henri Nouwen brings joy, whether it's into a painting ("Return of the Prodigal Son"), into the desert ("Way of the Heart"), across a calendar ("Bread for the Journey"), or into his own anguish ("Inner Voice of Love"). I was so taken with Nouwen challenge to a "eucharistic life" in this book that I have celebrated the Lord's Supper by myself several times.

An excellent theology of the Eucharist. A small book, but it's very weighty, and requires multiple readings to really reveal itself.

All Christians would be well served by reading this book. It is an easy read and does not get into deep technical theology but explains thoughtfully and clearly what it means to be a thankful Christian and what that thankful life would look like in your everyday life.

Whether or not you think something is missing in your life,it is always worth taking the time to read and then contemplate the writings of Henri Nouwen. Written in a clear, concise prose style,the words are simple enough to make you think that you always had come to the same conclusion and then complex enough to make you consider the content for years afterward.

Another Henri Nouwen exceptional book. It will make you look at the Eucharistic life differently and more reverantly!

This is a heartfelt devotion to our Lord Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar that really penetrated deeply into my soul. It is a thoughtful and thorough meditation on the Road to Emmaus story after the Resurrection. I liked particularly the deep discussion on Eucharist as thanksgiving for all God bestows on us. It is a quick read, easy to understand, that makes one think and pray.

The Mediated Mind is an academic treatise on the interrelationships between media and society and how it affects and drives consumerism. The book specifically deals with the impact of printed media and ephemera - cheap printed media such as magazines, cigarette cards, etc - from the 19th century onward and postulates a direct link between the early mass-print market and today.Two details going into the review. My grandfather was a Polish Jew who came to the USA without prior working knowledge of English. He learnt English by reading comic books, and inculcated the same love of comic books in my father. I am, thus, a third generation comic book and general ephemera nerd. I am also a keen fan of sociology and the impact of media. I am especially interested in how control and spin in the media relates to resistance (or passivity) in our society.I remember asking my grandfather over and over (and over) how the holocaust could possibly have happened. His answer was that nobody knew what was going on, and that demanding to know was very dangerous. The control of information was critical to controlling the population. Anyhow, the point is that this book examines the direct line between printed media and society and extrapolates to our current day daily media overload and how it affects our own collective psyche.This book was emphatically not an easy read. The author's expository prose is very academic and the text is written formally with exhaustive citations and cross references. The author follows a fairly rigid formula. In the introduction, tell the reader what you're going to tell them, use the body of the exposition to tell them in more detail, and in the conclusion, tell them what you told them.The introduction takes up roughly 10% of the page content and discusses what is covered in the book. The body of the book (~80%) deals with temperance ephemera and tracts, tobacco and cigarette cards - and the driving of 'addiction' to collecting and acquisition, our subconscious (Rorschach blots among other things), along with mass culture.The final chapter draws interesting comparisons between the 19th century everyman and our modern (western) everyman; still largely ignorant, crass, willfully uneducated, politically repugnant and/or naive.The conclusion is followed by a whopper of a footnote/reference section with citations.I've mentioned a couple of times that this book is a very dry academic read. I read every word and I'm still not 100% convinced it's not an elaborate joke on the pretentiousness of academia. I found it worthwhile, but I would definitely recommend it only readers who are especially interested.Five stars, but only for readers who are especially invested in the material. The Mediated Mind by Susan Zieger is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late April.I had come in thinking that this book was about alternatives to incarceration, but, no, it's about the consumption and production of media and advertisements (like books, collectible cigarette cards, sobriety medals, and Rorschach ink blots) at a heightened rate during the 19th century. It's fairly interesting and even fun, but it's also extensively and exhaustible sourced: I learned about the hypocrisy of collecting sobriety items if temperance (and public oration) is a reward within itself; the musing, pondersome, solitary activity of smoking; and cigarette cards being designed with literary authors and caricatures, thereby linking on an existing cultural addiction of reading.

When I first started reading this book, I just thought it was going to be like all the rest. Funny, goofy, and imaginative. While it was all those things just as I suspected, there was one thing that I did not expect. *Spoilers!George and Harold's backstories! The moment I saw little Harold and read about how his parents got divorced, his father moving away, his loneliness, and getting bullied all the time, tears came to my eyes. Although, once little George came and saved Harold from the bullies and later they started making their very first comic, my heart was filled with joy. I never suspected that the author would tell me all these things so suddenly! However, this was just what I was hoping for. I always knew that there was some emotional story behind George and Harold meeting each other, and I desperately wanted to know what it was.I would definitely recommend that you don't skip over this book. Even if you're not the type of person that likes emotional stories, you'll still love all the silliness that this novel has to offer. Even the backstory itself still has lots of humor in it!Overall, I thought that this book was very cute, funny, and emotional for anyone who loves this series. It's definitely worth reading, believe me. ;-)

I read this book aloud for my tween sons. We're fans of the series, and we all enjoyed it very much. The pranks were pretty funny and elaborate, and the story could be used as a jumping off point for a conversation about bullying. Do Harold and George go too far in bullying the bullies? What can you do when the principal (or another grown-up) ignores bullying in real life?This book (#9) is by far the longest of the series at 303 pages. By comparison, "Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman" (#5) is the second longest book we own in the series, at 170 pages. Perhaps that's why we didn't like #9 quite as much as usual - it seemed in any case that the first 10 chapters were a little slow.I must add: don't judge a book by its title. As a mom, I was very negative to the series before my boys got their first book of the series as a gift. We read it, and I liked it a million times more than I expected.

I gave my nephew 4 of these for his birthday. My brother let me know they were a huge hit. Kids love these books. Especially if you have a child or relative or loved one who might like a story that is a little silly and irreverent, take the chance and buy at least one of these. Have some fun! I know that my brother also has some fun reading these with his son.

These are just the most fun books for young boys. And there are enough inside jokes that any adult reading it to a child will enjoy it too. My husband has read this and other Dav Pilkey books to our sons for years. I think one of our fondest memories was from when he was deployed and he was reading to the boys over the phone and half the men in his group ended up piled outside his door listening as well and chuckling. Let's face it grown men are really just little boys at heart. ;)I was glad to see Mr. Pilkey return to the series with this book. Too many books forget what little boys like and are like and these books celebrate what makes little boys so rascally and yet so loveable.

So my 4 year old loves these books ever since we saw the movie in theaters. It's gotten him interested in reading and I haven't heard him laugh so much as this series of books. It's very clever and has some jokes for older kids and adults (nothing too crude), but my MIL wanted to read a few after reading these to my oldest son. Just a heads up, since it's a chapter book, younger kids don't quite get the 'one more chapter... please!' doesn't work after you've read 5 chapters and they want to know what's going to happen.

My kid loves the Captain Underpants series. Only two problems though:1) Why does anyone want to read about a cartoon character running around in their underpants?2) My son reads them so fast we have to order in bulk.Seriously, my son used to hate reading but read multiple books in the series at a record pace. I wish I had called Guiness Book of World records but who knew? I didn't even think he would finish one without being forced to read. +1 for the wife. Good decision.

Started buying this series for my husband to read to our toddler on his nights to read! My husband was griping that he only had a few books that he would read to our son because of his own preference so we got a captain underpants and haven't looked back! My husband enjoys reading these to our 3 year old son and our son loves daddy's enthusiasm, voices and excitement reading them! Wonderful buy for any dad's looking for books they enjoy reading as well!

I bought this as a gift for a friend's son, age 8. I don't know him very well and picked it because of how much my daughter enjoys the books in this series. It was a huge hit. The hardcover made it a nice gift, and this kiddo dove right in as soon as he unwrapped it! Turns out he's already a fan of the series and he hadn't read this one. A great response for a reasonably-priced gift. This is not the first time I've given a hardcover book from this series as a gift and it won't be the last!

Paul Williams gets it. Many researches and journalists bite of more than they can chew, analyzing the vast African continent. Their conclusions tend to remark how "inexplicable", "exotic" and irrational African conflicts are. We all know Africa is not a country. Williams takes the next step and not only breaks down the geographic regions but then explores the libraries of past research claiming the roots of African conflict to be either political, economic, ethnic, religious or post-colonial affiliated. As it turns out there is no "one" explanation.Those who research Africa, especially its violent contexts, truly need to stay away from generalized explanations. While Williams still uses the geographic term, "Africa", he admits to the immense diversity of such a project. "War and Conflict in Africa" is split into three sections: context, ingredients and responses (as Williams calls them). The first section dives right in to the vast literature on African conflicts, describing everything from the colonial history to international relations theory as it relates to the continent. Williams then calls the colonial aftermath, ethnicity, greed, religion, politics, land rites etc. the "ingredients" to conflict. Some ingredients promote conflict but very few of them are the roots of conflict.Williams carefully selects different conflicts and reviews the literature and theories related to each including: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, Algeria, Somalia, Rwanda, the DRC and a host of others. This book is not simply a review of the theories, however. Williams comes to his own conclusion that rational politicians eager to preserve or obtain power can be considered a root of most of Africa's conflicts. These poor examples of leadership simply instrumentalize ethnicity, religion and resources to their advantage.In the final section of the book, Williams reviews the progress of various African organizations created to contain or fight conflict. Despite the various peace-keeping and peacemaking initiatives the lack of unified leadership, political will and military professionalism continue to be large hurdles towards a sustainable solution. Power sharing pacts and conflict resolutions too often fell short of lasting peace. The former, as William's shows, simply supported the ruling elites and barely addressed the popular grievances.This leads to a particular thread knitted between the chapters. How beneficial is it to analyze and respond to African conflict through the state-centric approach? What level of analysis actually drives the African conflict environment? The answer probably depends on the country but as ruling elites prove detached from the masses, it could be a different set of society, civil society, business leaders, tribal elders, religious heads or youth movements that hold the key to improving or deciphering African politics.Finally, even in the current context of terrorist paranoia, Paul Williams dedicates barely a few pages to this discussion. In my opinion, this does not weaken his overall arguments but instead is a sign of his overall analytical acumen. Terrorism is nasty, but it should not overwhelm the discussion of conflict in any region. Terrorism has an ideological root but it just as easily manipulates the "ingredients" of conflict for its own cause as any other conflict trend. Too much focus on terrorism leaves the reality of conflict obscured.This is a must read for all those interested in the study of African conflict. The extensive resources touch on all the big names in Africa conflict research. William's focus is on Africa and its people. That is where analysis should begin and end. Too much focus on international "meddlers", international terrorists and the colonial boogeyman is insufficient to describe the whole picture.

A good book that gives you the history of conflicts that is happening in Africa. Book is divided in chapters and each chapter covers a current conflict. The book is a little dated so some of these conflicts have ended or are in the process of ending. Overall it describes who and how the conflicts started and gives a good conclusion as to what will happen.
