From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—An immersive, supernatural middle grade adventure. Hear the whispers of long-kept family secrets in shadowed corners. Feel the humidity of a languid Georgia summer. Beasley, author of Circus Mirandus, weaves the tale of two tweens spending the summer looking for the way out of an ancestral curse. In 1817, 12-year-old Blue Montgomery's forebear Walcott (a fugitive horse thief) and Tumble Wilson's ancestor Almira (a "murderous young bride") were forced—by violence—to split the mysterious gift of changing one's fate, which they obtained from the fabled golden gator, deep in the Okefenokee Swamp at the rising of a bloodred moon. Both sought to escape the consequences of their crimes, but legend says that the golden gator's gift is meant for only one. "Those are the rules, and they can be terribly sharp when broken." Ever after, subsequent generations in both families were struck indiscriminately with either good or bad luck. A chance to fight the gator for his gift comes only once every 100 years when the moon runs red. Now, as the time draws near again two centuries later, Tumble and Blue must reverse the curse if there's to be any hope of normal lives for them both. Beasley's shimmering prose pulls readers in, line by line, like a fish dragging on a hook through swampy waters. The lush setting and lustrous portrayal of the characters will captivate even the most reluctant reader. VERDICT Middle graders will delight in the richly drawn world and history that Beasley creates. A first purchase for most collections.—Chelsea Woods, New Brunswick Free Public Library, NJ

Cassie Beasley has an amazing ability to create lovable, fun characters that we want to cheer for and celebrate. Tumble and Blue are exactly that! This story is set in the swamps of the south. Blue is dropped off by his father for the summer to live with his grandmother and a growing number of distant relatives, all of whom are hoping to change their individual family curse/gift said to lie in the meeting of an alligator named Munch. It is a story of friendship, hope, greed, and heroism. Loved this book so much and can't wait to share it with students in the fall.

Love this book! Charming! Delightful! I know a sweet girl that is just like Tumble! Blue gets my vote for what many of us feel, but often think we are the only ones feeling that way. The South Georgia rural setting is spot on with crazy relatives and eccentric neighbors. Watch out for alligators! A great gift for preteens & teens. I found out about the book at a ladies book club. 😀 Audio version is also super. Great narrator at a good pace!

I loved this book! I love the older characters and the idea of family curses and how you can ask for everything in the world, but no one, not even your family may give it to you. This book made me think of a fable and I would love to see it as a movie! I also loved Ms. Beasley's other book, Circus Mirandus, she is just all kind of talented, I can't wait for her next book.

From the second I started this book, I didn't want to put it down! Middle readers will love the main characters, Tumble and Blue, and all the silliness that happens within their families. This books ends with a great lesson on friendship and selflessness, however, the ending might leave you with more questions than answers. Will definitely be putting this book on my summer reading list for my students!IG: @goodreadsformiddlereaders

GREAT book! Absolutely loved all the shenanigans Tumble and Blue got themselves into as well as all the craziness of the cursed Montgomery's! I thought the ending was just a wee bit abrupt, but that may have been because I didn't want the book to end. ;) Highly recommend!

A great read with interesting, likable characters; magical realism; humor; and, most importantly, heart.

I love the determination of Tumble and Blue as they race to change the course of their destinies. Friendship, family, & magic realism- a perfect blend!

Very good book about friendship (per my 10.5yo daughter who loves to read)
