So for our son, who has Autism among other things, trying to get him to actually sit for a book that wasn't one of the books being read to him before around 15 months, is brutally difficult. Because as far as he's concerned, that's his Canon of literature and no other books need apply. I have books I've been trying for the past 2 years to get him to sit through with absolutely zero luck. This book is one of the rare exceptions we've been able to get him to tolerate in that way (and I've been trying for months at that as it is!). I think what made that possible is that he actually likes season one of Daniel Tiger, and because this book parallels what he saw on the shows, it seemed more familiar to him, and allowed him to slowly be stretched into allowing it onto his list of tolerated and accepted texts. So for me, a huge selling point of this book is how closely it follows the show. I also really like that it has two different text boxes...one with a more wordy plot line you can read, and one box that's just a brief one-liner. So we were able to start out with the one-liner and move our way up...I totally love that as a feature, it's great for kids who might struggle with maintaining attention on something less desirable to them.

Daniel Tiger is my 18 mo grand daughter's favorite. She is only allowed 30 min of TV a day and Daniel is her choice. The books are great so we can read and talk about the characters after the TV show. The lessons are based on Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. Not only do they teach children, but also adults. They teach adults how to talk to children in a respectful and understanding way. This is a nice board book with great pictures. It has some pages with very simple text at the bottom & more complex text on the top. Adds to the length of time the book can be useful for young kids.

My daughter likes this book so much that she chews on it! :-) But yeah, you have to get over the fact that they just took still images from the actual episodes and added a few lines of text. Good enough for small children.

Very happy with product. Quick delivery.

Our little nephew loves Daniel Tiger! This is a great little book!

Seriously, we have given 3 of these as gifts and have one for our 2 year old. A toddler who likes the show goes crazy for this book like a tween for Taylor Swift. The wheels move people! We get pictures from the recipients parents of them going around the room saying 'Ding Ding!'

Great hardboard book that follows the PBS television story of Daniel Tiger! Our granddaughter loves to watch and sing and dance along with Daniel Tiger and now she loves to sit and read along the stories from the books with Daddy and Mommy and her grandparents!

I like this but the book so much! Yet, it came bent...instead of being flat, it was curved so it doesnt sit flat on a flat surface. I think it's the manufacturing because the packaging was very protected with bubble paper, still works and not worth the hassle for a return so we kept it :)

This book is so real it hurts, I first read it in highschool and fell in love with the nitty gritty no holds barred reality it shows. It's short and bitter and would make an amazing adult fiction if it was longer but for what it is it's well deserving of five stars. Parents be warned, there is some cursing but let's be honest, what teen hasn't heard the F word at least a couple hundred times already, that's really no reason to down rate this amazing book.P.S.A. If you want a happy ending skip the news article at the end, if you want reality and a truly amazing book, get yourself some tissues and read it in a secluded location, you've been warned.

This is a great read for teachers as we are learning more about children with psychotic disorders, and how the person experiences this disorder. It also show from a parent perspective the family dynamics of a the family trying to help their child. This was a moving and emotional read providing insight into the lives of those dealing with this difficult situation. Even more so with the current political system, also puts into play the plight of the teenagers who have taken to crime to support their family.

Terry Trueman has done it again! Inside Out is an amazingly intense read. The main character, Zach is perfectly framed in a bad situation, a hold up, but nothing could be as bad as the battle Zach has going on in his mind. Zach suffers from schizophrenia and tries very hard to do what is perceived to be "appropriate" in our society.Trueman manages to create a character in Zach that is unforgettable. This story MOVES so fast, it is over before you know it. I could not put this book down.Trueman's ability to draw the reader in and make each character, major or minor, an important one is unparalleled. This book is a wonderful mix of a fast-paced story with action, tense moments of anticipation, and characters that the reader can identify with immediately. To top all of that off, Terry Trueman has alerted the public about the horrors of schizophrenia. You have done it again Terry Trueman!

This is an amazing read and should be on everyone's must-read list.Zac Wahhsted is a young man that has a tough time understanding himself or others. He's a diagnosed schizophrenic but this likeable young man gives us a glimpse into a confusing child-like world that will have you laughing out loud one moment and tearing up the next. At only 120 pages of clear concise prose this is a lightning quick read and when you finish it you know that you'll remember aspects of it forever.Zac is one of those unforgettable once in a lifetime characters that you sometimes meet in fiction. You'll never see mental illness quite the same after reading this.I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This was read to me in middle school, and had the urge to read it again. I was pulled in from the start, and loved the story. My brother has schizophrenia, so this hits me at a personal level. Overall, this is a short but fantastic read.

" 'Zach, you're a stupid wong-gong, a long-gone wong-gong.'"I ignore this, but while I'm sitting here being quiet, my palms are sweaty and my throat is dry. I need to decide if this situation is real or not; I need to decide that right now. Sometimes I understand what's going on, and other times I don't have a clue. If I don't figure this one out, I could be in trouble."According to the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression:"Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe brain disorder which affects approximately 1 percent of the world population. Approximately 2 million people in the United States suffer from the disease in a given year. Schizophrenia is characterized by positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and markedly disorganized behavior. Negative symptoms include reduced emotional expression, social withdrawal, loss of pleasure, difficulty concentrating and/or thinking, and a lack of energy, spontaneity or initiative. Treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms and preventing psychotic relapses. Schizophrenia is usually treated with antipsychotic medication, and may be used in combination with psychosocial therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Many scientists believe that schizophrenia results from a chemical imbalance in the brain, and are investigating various neurotransmitters in determining this imbalance."Sixteen-year-old Zach Wahhsted suffers from adolescent onset schizophrenia. He waits at the coffee shop after school each day; him mom picks him up there up at 3:30 and gives him his medication. It is imperative that he get his twice-daily medication on time so that Rat and Dirtbag--the worst of the voices in his head that have tortured him in the past--don't come back.Today, Zach will not get his medication on time."All I want is a maple bar, but I don't think these kids with the guns care about what I want."Today, as Zach waits for his mom's arrival, a pair of teenagers, "Frosty" and "Stormy," come in to rob the coffee shop and the situation disintergrates into an armed standoff with hostages."I look around at everybody else in this place, and they all look scared, so I'm trying to look scared too. I mean, I guess I'm scared, but this all seems so normal to me. The thing is, I'm used to seeing and hearing really weird stuff, so this doesn't feel that strange to me at all."As a schizophrenic, Zach tends to react differently--some would say inappropriately."One of the kids with a gun, the older-looking one, says, 'Nobody's gonna get hurt if you just do what we tell you!'"I say, 'Okay.'"He seems surprised at the sound of my voice and looks at me real fast, then away again."He says, 'We don't wanna hurt anybody.'" 'Good,' I say."He looks at me again, 'You gotta problem?' he asks. I think he sounds mad." 'Yes,' I say."This surprises him too. 'Oh, yeah?' he asks, then he points his gun right at me. 'What's your problem?'"I'm sort of surprised that he wants to know."His gun is big and black, with a wide hole in the end of the barrel. It's like a tunnel."I answer him as truthfully as I can. 'I'm sick, that's my problem; I take medicine two times every day, thanks for asking.' ""The lunatic is in my headThe lunatic is in my headYou raise the blade, you make the changeYou re-arrange me 'til I'm saneYou lock the doorAnd throw away the keyThere's someone in my head but it's not me"--Pink FloydINSIDE OUT is a tense and often comic tale that plays out inside the back room of the coffee shop and inside Zach Wahhsted's head as 3:30 comes and goes..."I wonder if Frosty and Stormy are going to shoot me. Like in that movie Pulp Fiction. The bad guys shoot lots of people in that movie. I'm definitely NOT going to ask them about Pulp Fiction or about shooting us. I don't want to give them any bad ideas."I don't even want to think about getting shot, and so I try to be real quiet..."After whispering to Stormy, Frosty says, 'Okay, everybody, we've got an announcement.'"All of us look at Frosty, but before he can say anything else, I hear words flying out of my mouth..." 'Frosty,' I ask, 'did you ever see that movie Pulp Fiction?' "This story of how the kid with all the voices in his head turns out to be the voice of reason in a tense life-and-death situation is a spectacular read. And while there is great levity in the unique rapport that develops between Zach and the armed teens, beneath the hostage situation is the realization that no matter how the standoff ends, Zach will forever be hostage to those voices in his head.

Shipping is very fast and book is brand new. This is my favorite book. Taking you into the life of a young boy with schizophrenia and it's beautifully written. So glad I found it for such a great price.

I was already a fan of author Terry Trueman, based on STUCK IN NEUTRAL.INSIDE OUT did not disappoint. Much like STUCK IN NEUTRAL illuminated the possibility of what goes on inside a profoundly disabled person's mind and heart, INSIDE OUT provides insight into the mind of a schizophrenic teenage boy. Highly recommended, and, as others have said, a quick read. Definitely one for reluctant readers.

This book is awesome! I'm a stay-at-home mom with an almost 3 year old. I own other activity books, such as the Busy Book, but this enormous one tops them all! Yes, it's intended for teachers but the daily "lesson plan" structure is extremely helpful for moms who like to do several activities each day with your kids. And to have it organized all nice and neat in one big book... it's great. Better than Pinterest. Each day has a theme and explores five or more regions of playful learning, such as Art, Sensory, Dramatic (pretend) play, Small & Gross Motor, Literacy, Writing, Math, Science, etc, depending on the day. Also listed are a selection of books to read for that day and a snack idea.I'm just starting to get into this book and absolutely loving it. This is just what I've been looking for. If you're a mom who likes to keep your child(ren) engaged in play & activity instead of entertained by screens & TV, this book will be your best friend. It's very accessible and just an enormous mound of ideas.tip: Try to buy it used. I got a copy in great condition for a fraction of the 'new' price (and still qualified for free super saver shipping). My copy was listed as Good condition - it seems only slightly used, much better than I was expecting! Thank you Amazon!

I used to be a preschool teacher in my former life (i.e. before I became a mom!), and when my toddlers reached the age of 2.5, I decided I needed a formal teaching curriculum. When I say "formal," I mean one that was structured but could also be adapted to a parent's limited-resource situation. This book has been all of that and more. Each activity through the day is listed (from Circle Time through Assessment), as well as recommended books and materials. The subjects are as varied as one could want - from outer space to holidays to nature. I found that with most lessons, even if I didn't have the materials or books, I could usually supplement what we had in our craft box and/or bookshelf to make the theme work. I'd definitely recommend this one.

Very happy with both the product and the seller. Fast shipping, as promised by the seller, and cheap for how much I know these books can cost. The layout of the lessons has some to be desired but with that being it's only downside I'd say even the $30+ MSRP is honestly fair. I homeschool a four year old and despite the lessons being driven toward classes with multiple children, I've found the lessons easily adaptable to just us. I really love the lesson-inspired snack ideas and extra love the songs. As a life-long heavy metal listener I don't have a lot of nursery rhymes or toddler/preschool appropriate songs in my music library and the songs with the lessons helped a LOT.

This book is an amazing resource to have on hand when educating your young child at home. Young minds need to be stimulated and many times I find myself "hitting the wall" when it comes to fun and useful ideas after a long week. I like to sit down with this over the weekend to help flesh out the coming weeks lesson plans to liven up our work. One review did mention this is better for groups at times and I found this true and had to adapt some plans at times. I do believe this is actually made for teachers so it only makes it would be set up for larger groups. Still, this is a must have for those of us with Pre-K kiddos!

As a home-school teacher to my preschooler, this was a bit complex. It's definitely more for a "teacher" with lots of resources and students. There's a lot of group activities and discussions as well as a lot of materials needed.

Would award five stars but shipping was way too long took almost two weeks to arrive, I exp3ct better as a prime member. Howeber, comprehensive teaching tool for schoolteacher each erst and I don't agree with other reviewers that it's not for homeschool, you have a brain...think it through although all aspects of each plan are geared towards group activities they can be adjusted to homeschoolers, and hey....have a play date with another homeschooler. Share your resources. Highly recomended

More designed for classrooms and big groups of students, but I've still found this book really good for getting activity ideas for my 2.5 year old. He's not going to preschool this year, and keeping him challenged and happy is tricky. This is full of lots and lots of ideas that I've been able to modify or riff off to keep him going. My only slight dislike is so many of the suggested songs are set to "traditional" melodies that I've never heard of. Excellent resource for young home school families.

I've actually had the book a few weeks and I'm just starting to use it. I already had lesson plans done when I purchased the book and now those are coming to an end and this has been really great helping me organize my ideas and thoughts. I know what lessons I want but I've needed the extra help getting organized to figure out what I want to do. The book is LOADED with not just ideas but songs, books to read, hands on activities, arts and crafts, role play, etc. It has everything! You are bound to find just what you are looking for.

Tumble & Blue, by Cassie Beasley

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—An immersive, supernatural middle grade adventure. Hear the whispers of long-kept family secrets in shadowed corners. Feel the humidity of a languid Georgia summer. Beasley, author of Circus Mirandus, weaves the tale of two tweens spending the summer looking for the way out of an ancestral curse. In 1817, 12-year-old Blue Montgomery's forebear Walcott (a fugitive horse thief) and Tumble Wilson's ancestor Almira (a "murderous young bride") were forced—by violence—to split the mysterious gift of changing one's fate, which they obtained from the fabled golden gator, deep in the Okefenokee Swamp at the rising of a bloodred moon. Both sought to escape the consequences of their crimes, but legend says that the golden gator's gift is meant for only one. "Those are the rules, and they can be terribly sharp when broken." Ever after, subsequent generations in both families were struck indiscriminately with either good or bad luck. A chance to fight the gator for his gift comes only once every 100 years when the moon runs red. Now, as the time draws near again two centuries later, Tumble and Blue must reverse the curse if there's to be any hope of normal lives for them both. Beasley's shimmering prose pulls readers in, line by line, like a fish dragging on a hook through swampy waters. The lush setting and lustrous portrayal of the characters will captivate even the most reluctant reader. VERDICT Middle graders will delight in the richly drawn world and history that Beasley creates. A first purchase for most collections.—Chelsea Woods, New Brunswick Free Public Library, NJ

Cassie Beasley has an amazing ability to create lovable, fun characters that we want to cheer for and celebrate. Tumble and Blue are exactly that! This story is set in the swamps of the south. Blue is dropped off by his father for the summer to live with his grandmother and a growing number of distant relatives, all of whom are hoping to change their individual family curse/gift said to lie in the meeting of an alligator named Munch. It is a story of friendship, hope, greed, and heroism. Loved this book so much and can't wait to share it with students in the fall.

Love this book! Charming! Delightful! I know a sweet girl that is just like Tumble! Blue gets my vote for what many of us feel, but often think we are the only ones feeling that way. The South Georgia rural setting is spot on with crazy relatives and eccentric neighbors. Watch out for alligators! A great gift for preteens & teens. I found out about the book at a ladies book club. 😀 Audio version is also super. Great narrator at a good pace!

I loved this book! I love the older characters and the idea of family curses and how you can ask for everything in the world, but no one, not even your family may give it to you. This book made me think of a fable and I would love to see it as a movie! I also loved Ms. Beasley's other book, Circus Mirandus, she is just all kind of talented, I can't wait for her next book.

From the second I started this book, I didn't want to put it down! Middle readers will love the main characters, Tumble and Blue, and all the silliness that happens within their families. This books ends with a great lesson on friendship and selflessness, however, the ending might leave you with more questions than answers. Will definitely be putting this book on my summer reading list for my students!IG: @goodreadsformiddlereaders

GREAT book! Absolutely loved all the shenanigans Tumble and Blue got themselves into as well as all the craziness of the cursed Montgomery's! I thought the ending was just a wee bit abrupt, but that may have been because I didn't want the book to end. ;) Highly recommend!

A great read with interesting, likable characters; magical realism; humor; and, most importantly, heart.

I love the determination of Tumble and Blue as they race to change the course of their destinies. Friendship, family, & magic realism- a perfect blend!

Very good book about friendship (per my 10.5yo daughter who loves to read)

Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Rise of the Graphic Novel, by Stephen Weiner

From School Library Journal

A comics historian offers a short but pithy history of the industry and how it led to the format known as the graphic novel, a term first coined by Will Eisner in the late 1970s. The first third of the book analyzes the factors that influenced the evolution of comic-book content, quality, and readership from The Yellow Kid in 1895 to the first graphic novels, paying special attention to the causes and effects of the Comics Code Authority, the severely restrictive production code established in 1954. Weiner maps out the relationships among publishers, distributors, and retail outlets. This is helpful for understanding the route by which an unconventional, independent title such as Jeff Smith's Bone finds an initial readership, appears in a number of editions, and may be picked up by a larger publishing house. A good portion of the book is dedicated to the revival of the industry in the 1980s, when creators like Frank Miller and Alan Moore reinvented traditional superheroes for a more sophisticated adult audience, and how this revival paved the way for the astonishing diversity we see today. Perhaps most valuable for librarians is Weiner's description of not only the various types of comics and graphic novels, but also of the nature of various types of fans-readers of arty work such as Julius Knipfl, Real Estate Photographer are not likely to embrace the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Illustrated on every page with pertinent comics panels, this book is meant to be a durable addition to a shelf that also includes Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics (Tundra, 1993) and David Hadju's The Ten-Cent Plague (Farrar, 2008). Break out the reading glasses though-you can't fit all this analysis, plus copious illustrations, into 70 pages without using a typeface that is punishingly small.-Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MDα(c) Copyright 2011.
