I enjoyed the book every much. Im a muslim so I already know the stories but wanted to read from a mainstream writer after watching him on CNN. The book served its purpose, Chopra wrote "I didnt write this book to make Muhammed more holy. I wrote it to show that holiness was just as confusing, terrifying, and exalting in the 7th century as it would be today" (location 120 in the book). Chopra accomplished this in the book, he showed all the confusing calamities and crazy wars that happened in the time of Muhammed peace be upon him, yet He had to take difficult actions for survival and not going against what he preached and believed in. He truly believed that God has reached out to him, even though it sounded crazy to him for the longest time. People believed him more than he believed himself. In the book preached things like "Do you want to show how much you love your Creator", the villager replied "with all my heart", Muhammed responded "then love your fellow behings first" (location 2305). There were skeptics in Muhammed's days, where they thought he was crazy, But after being around Muhammed, Muhammed told one non believer friend "I would lose any battle to win a heart of a great soul". These are teachings of islam, compassion and believing in god, yet Islam gets a bad reputation in present day today. I highly recommend this book because its an easy read. Chapter 18 Yasmin the Women at the Well made me cry so much, i was boohoo-ing as I was reading, it was very touching.

4.5 stars: I had braced myself to slog through Deepak Chopra's biographical novel "Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet." Instead, I was delightfully surprised by the compelling story of Muhammad's journey from affluent trader to reluctant prophet, and the engagingly lyrical music of the suras (verses) he channeled from Allah.Story: Although ostensibly a novel, Chopra bookends his story about the Muslim prophet with an author's note and an afterword, offering the reader a history lesson while reflecting on the current relationship between Islam and the rest of the world. The novel emphasizes that of all the founders of the great world religions, Muhammad is the most like us. Muhammad, a merchant who marries a rich widow and routinely travels in caravans as part of his trade, lives a regular life until the day the archangel Gabriel appears and orders the reluctant 40-year-old Muhammad to recite. (To recite, Chopra reminds, is the root word of Koran.) Using multiple first-person narrators--slaves and merchants, hermits, and scribes--he portrays life (including its brutality) on the streets of Mecca. Each chapter is self-contained. Muhammad's wife, Khadijah, laments there have been no warnings that this tumultuous, life-changing event is about to occur; Ali, the first convert, explains how the Prophet approached him. Compellingly told, this is not only good storytelling; it also helps readers, especially non-Muslims, better understand the complexities and contradictions surrounding Islam. (From Booklist)Spiritual/metaphysical content: Medium. The book focused more on the man than his teachings, which I found to be less than satisfying. I had hoped to gain more insight into the teachings of Islam, although Chopra does describe the five pillars and six core beliefs of Islam, along with some of his other teachings. However, other aspects of the work delighted me. I expected to learn much about Islam, but what I didn't expect was the love of poetry that suffused Arab hearts and the attendant lyricism of Muhammad's suras. I enjoyed the poetry of each sura as much as the message. Do you not see how he has lengthened the shadows? the One is He who made the night a garment for you. He gave you sleep so that you may rest And the morning sky to be a resurrection.And Lo, I swear by the afterglow of sunset, And by the night and all it enshrouds. And by the moon when she is at the full, You will journey to higher and higher worlds.Another unexpected delight was the wealth of Arabic sayings that were both pithy and poetic: "Fate ... was like a wasp covered in honey. You cannot taste the sweetness without a sting."My take: In addition to being a simple and easy introduction to the life and teachings of Muhammad and Islam, "Muhammad" proves to be entertaining, historically accurate, and relevant to our times. Chopra's stilted writing style made several of his non-historical novels less than enjoyable to me in the past. However, his short and direct prose works well in the context of this fictionalized biography. By writing each chapter from a different character's perspective, including Muhammad's enemies, Chopra offers fascinating perspective and varies what might otherwise be a monotonal story. The actual events of the Prophet's life provide a thrilling framework fraught with conflict that propels the story forward.I learned a great deal about Muhammad's life and the rise of Islam. Although much blood was spilled in the evolution of Islam, violence was integral to Arabic life at that time. Muhammad struggled to project his message of peace, acceptance, and submission above the sometimes horrific reality of Arabic life in the 7th century. Chopra's author's note, afterward, timeline, and family tree helped clarify the complex history of the times and placed his life in a clearly defined context.One of the most fascinating aspects of the story was the realization that Muhammad was a man like any other, not a son of God (such as Jesus) nor a transcendent human (such as Buddha). The angel Gabriel chose him as a medium to deliver Allah's message, and the reader clearly sees how Muhammad was forced into the role of reluctant prophet but also military commander, master politician, and sometimes brutal judge in order to ensure the survival of Allah's message. As Chopra notes, "I didn't write this book to make Muhammad more holy. I wrote it to show that holiness was just as confusing, terrifying, and exalting in the 7th century as it would be today."

I cannot decide which book Buddha, or Muhammad i admire more. They both take a deep and sometimes confusing subject and make it accessible to someone like me. I took issue with Mr. Chopra's Jesus because it felt stilted but that is not the case here. I would like to state clearly that I am not any kind of scholar of anything, just a voracious reader who thought this series would be interest in. Not was that an understatement. I have found amazing insights and understandings that I hadn't even previously conceived. Thank you for these books, now on to God.

In Warner's Muhammad and the Unbelievers, Muhammad's story is put together with Sira and Hadith filling in gaps in the Koran. There, you get it plainly, without the modern polish an avoidance of negatives.

Prior to reading this book I little real understanding of Islam and it origins - or Arabic culture for that matter. This book was a wonderful gateway to the opening of that door. Even though it is a novel, I know that Deepak thoroughly reasearches his work, and in doing so he has created a beautiful and I'm sure reasonably accurate rendering of 4th/5th century Mecca, and the culture of the Arab peoples of that time. Reading this work gave me a great appreciation of the history of the Middle Eastern people and the Islmaic faith, and some insights as to how and why it has evolved the way it has. I know Deepak well enough to know that he believes that developing an understanding of world cultures, especially those who many people fear - is an essential step in bringing people together and ending world conflict - and I think this book is a powerful step in that direction.

Deepak Chopra has written a wonderful book about a very controversial man. Muhammad was controversial in the 8th Century and his teachings are controversial now. If you read this and understand that this was a man who tried to make his world kinder and gentler, you get a picture, now distorted, of a world that the Buddha and Jesus of Nazareth would have appreciated. Unfortunately, the religions of the Middle East have been torn asunder and Muhammad's teachings are barely recognized in the current climate of endless, cruel wars.

Book Project Critical ReviewJames EguesBlack Hawk Down, written by Mark Bowden, a journalist, tells a story about a group of American Soldiers that were sent into Somalia on a humanitarian mission authorized by George Bush in 1992. Several of the helicopters, Black Hawks, that they brought with them into the mission were shot down and the crews were mutilated by a local militia. Every time a Black Hawk crashed, a brutal firefight broke out, resulting in deaths and injuries of American soldiers. The rescue team could not land to get the group because of local Somalis. The mission was overall a failure, the missionâ€™s death toll was one thousand of Somalis and nineteen American Soldiers. and at the end of the book, soldiers are celebrating the return of Michael Durant, who was the pilot for the Super Six One Black Hawk. Michael Durant was the only survivor from the Super Six One group. Bowdenâ€™s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line.As I was reading, I fell into the book and could not stop reading. It felt as if I was really there in the setting of the book. The style Mark Bowden used to write the book made me fall in love with the story. The writing brings out great visualization for the reader, making them feel like they are in the book with. Journalistic writing has a more exciting feel to it rather than classic novelistic writing. I feel as if classic novels are more creative and have more visualization rather than journalistic writing, and I love how Black Hawk Down has that journalistic feel to it. Journalistic writing is usually more putting words on paper for the reader to be able to easily read and understand what is going on. I enjoy this because it is straightforward and can have good visualization and novelistic writing is more creative and the author has more time to write their book. They can easily put together a picture with words for the reader. The style of writing made me pay more attention to the book and I felt very interested in what was going on. I could not stop myself from reading and every chance I got, I would read the book. When reading a classic novelistic book, I feel like I am reading the book for class, however when I read a journalistic book, I feel free and enjoy reading the book.I enjoyed the different points of views Mark Bowden used throughout the book. Every other chapter or so, The point of view would change from the view of the soldiers to the view of local Somalis. It portrayed the difference between the two sides. It showed how an event could have a completely different effect on one side than the other. It helped me understand the different opinions and struggles between the two angles. It added some knowledge to the book and taught me somethings about the struggles the two groups faced. Everything the soldiers did had an impact on the Somalis, and everything the Somalis did had an impact on the soldiers. When a fight broke out it spanned across multiple chapters of the book and then switched to another perspective and continued onto some more chapters under that perspective. I thought this was helpful and very interesting.The organization of the story line was neat and looked clean. The book was split into a couple different sections, The Assault, and Black Hawk Down and more. The book starts with The Assault and follows with Black Hawk Down and continues with a couple more. I thought this was cool and organized. Chapters were short and chronological. Because the chapters were so short, there were tons of chapters. I did not like that feature, but other than the length of the chapters, everything was fine. Each chapter was tightly packed with dialogue and action. There were very few chapters that were not containing action and or dialogue between characters. I thought this was fun to read and helped me stay interested in the book.All in all, I loved the book Black Hawk Down, by Mark Bowden. I thought it was the perfect mixture of action and a sad story. Bowdenâ€™s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line. I loved the journalistic writing feel to the book. I enjoyed reading this book overall because I could not stop reading. I was attached to the book because of its writing style and the action. The different points of view from the soldiers and the Somalis surprised me and was very interesting. I thought the organization of the storyline was very neat and clean. I especially liked how the book was split into two parts. I would love to recommend Black Hawk Down to anyone who loves an action packed, war themed, sad story.

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions.However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

A must-read for anyone doing work in the field or students pursuing a career in AI.As a professional AI researcher and developer, I originally planned to just read a few of the articles touching on techniques I use or am interested in, but ended up reading it cover to cover. The quality of the articles and applicability to current research is phenomenal. Kudos to Steven Rabin for really excellent selection and editing. All scholarly mumbo jumbo has been fully excluded. The descriptions of the techniques are clear and easy-to-understand.This second volume is a big improvement over volume one, which tended to have a lot of idiosyncratic articles you would not care about unless you were interested in the exact, squirrely case for which the author was decribing the solution. Volume two has much better coverage of key methods like A*, MCTS, minimax, constraint-based programming and other techniques which have general applicability. As an example of this, volume one had an article describing the architecture used for implementing the kill bots in Killzone 3 which was very interesting and informative, but not anything you would be likely to use directly, even if you were solving that same problem. Volume two has articles more like the one in Chapter 3 on dual-utility reasoning by Kevin Dill. Dill gives a nice two-page summary of dual-utility and describes how he used it in Zoo Tycoon 2. For the AI developer this is really useful and something you might end up actually implementing or leveraging in some way. Also, volume 2 has better literature references and better grounding in the scholarly state of the art.Game AI Pro 1 was excellent, but this new edition ups the ante and is even better, providing even more practical and apropos articles.

At first I did not take this book seriously. The author uses waaay too many puns and spends too much time developing analogies for simple concepts that are clear enough already. But after a while, I learned to ignore this stuff and found there is really quote a lot of meat here.The book starts with very basic particle physics, optics and refraction with a focus for how these topics control and modify passing EM waves. It then applies these to the rarified plasma that makes up the ionosphere. Also covered is the effects of ground on propagation and goes into how this all relates to antenna performance. Finally, I think the last few chapters are the best, where the book discusses questions that are still open and potential areas of further research.So if you don't get distracted, this book has lots of good info and ideas for experimentation.

I got interested in the DX hobby, and intend to extend to Amateur Radio and Amateur Astronomy. Based on that I bought some books and this was one of them. If your interest is in any of the three topics above or are curious in this aspect physics, you will not regret buying this book. Reasons are:1 - Language - The author has the skill of depicting technical topics in a very easy to understand and informal way, nevertheless I finished the book with a clear picture of the processes involved.2 - Crescendo - I like the style of starting with something we are familiar (light) and then building on that to explain the other topics. This requires a bit of understanding in physics, particularly polarization. You will need that concept, but chances are that if you heard of that, you did it for light in whatever physics classes you took.3 - Coverage - I figured out that radio propagation is a vast field. The author tackles many concepts in a concise way, but it provides links on concepts you want to expand.On the improvement side, I think some graphs need to be a bit bigger, like the Ionograms (I bought the kindle version of the book), but then jump on Google and you will get the graphs and axis you need to read.Overall great reading. Good job.

This title provides the amateur radio enthusiast with a macro and micro view or wave propagation. At times, this text is dry and contains some filler content to review past material but the text is full of great material and explanation of propagation, the ionosphere and how to instructions. Highly recommended and worth your money.

This is an excellent book. It is written in an informal style (appropriate to its intended Radio Amateur "Ham" audience), Although lacking in a formal academic style, the text is clear and easy to read. I found no technical errors and found the book to be easy to read, although for a non professional reader, there are sections which the reader will want to read several times over.The scope of the book is surprisingly wide, covering a broad topic with delightful completeness. Whether a reader is interested in completeness or in a quick review of radio wave propagation science, this book should satisfy.There is much more to the science of world wide radio signal propagation than a casual observer might suspect, and this book does an excellent job.This reviewer was one of the original designers of the "Topside Sounder", the first satellite ionosounder to probe the upper side of the ionosphere, and is proud to have made a contribution to ionospheric physics; this book brought back many vivid memories, some of them sad because they relate to friends and coworkers who are no longer with us ...

Extremely informative yet easy to read. I am am new HAM and this is such technical topic that it's easy to get lost. However this book breaks the concepts and topics down very well. I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn more about propagation for their HAM radio hobby.

This is not a book for someone brand new to radio. But you also don't have to have a degree in Electrical Engineering to understand it either. It is for tbe person that wants to understand what radio waves do and why. If you are the person that does self study...this is for you. Love it..

Beautifully written and illustrated. Like a wonderful meal, this book should be savoured slowly and shared with friends. One again Henri Nouwen breaks open the Gospels, strengthens our Catholic faith, and helps us see beyond our own brokenness. In addition to being a wonderful and contemplative read, the book itself is beautiful and would make an excellent gift.

I love that Henri wrote this for himself in the sense that he really wanted to write it for his own reasons and not because somebody else wanted him to write another book. To hear the depth of understanding and appreciation from someone who lived a eucharistic life is priceless. I'm experiencing a new depth of appreciation for the sacrament that is most personal to Jesus. Everyone I show this book to wants a copy. I highly recommend it.

Henri Nouwen explains the Lord's Supper in the context of the two disciples' walk with Jesus down the road to Emmaus at the end of Luke's gospel. He sees five interrelating movements in the celebration of the Lord's Supper, each movement corresponding to an event along the disciples' walk. This is a meditation, not a theological treatise, so the soul and the mind share the road. Nouwen's meditations are challenging and joyous, and this is one of the best I've read. Going on any trip with Henri Nouwen brings joy, whether it's into a painting ("Return of the Prodigal Son"), into the desert ("Way of the Heart"), across a calendar ("Bread for the Journey"), or into his own anguish ("Inner Voice of Love"). I was so taken with Nouwen challenge to a "eucharistic life" in this book that I have celebrated the Lord's Supper by myself several times.

An excellent theology of the Eucharist. A small book, but it's very weighty, and requires multiple readings to really reveal itself.

All Christians would be well served by reading this book. It is an easy read and does not get into deep technical theology but explains thoughtfully and clearly what it means to be a thankful Christian and what that thankful life would look like in your everyday life.

Written in a clear, concise prose style,the words are simple enough to make you think that you always had come to the same conclusion and then complex enough to make you consider the content for years afterward.

It is a thoughtful and thorough meditation on the Road to Emmaus story after the Resurrection. I liked particularly the deep discussion on Eucharist as thanksgiving for all God bestows on us. It is a quick read, easy to understand, that makes one think and pray.

I am especially interested in how control and spin in the media relates to resistance (or passivity) in our society.I remember asking my grandfather over and over (and over) how the holocaust could possibly have happened. His answer was that nobody knew what was going on, and that demanding to know was very dangerous. The control of information was critical to controlling the population. Anyhow, the point is that this book examines the direct line between printed media and society and extrapolates to our current day daily media overload and how it affects our own collective psyche.This book was emphatically not an easy read. The author's expository prose is very academic and the text is written formally with exhaustive citations and cross references. The author follows a fairly rigid formula. In the introduction, tell the reader what you're going to tell them, use the body of the exposition to tell them in more detail, and in the conclusion, tell them what you told them.The introduction takes up roughly 10% of the page content and discusses what is covered in the book. The body of the book (~80%) deals with temperance ephemera and tracts, tobacco and cigarette cards - and the driving of 'addiction' to collecting and acquisition, our subconscious (Rorschach blots among other things), along with mass culture.The final chapter draws interesting comparisons between the 19th century everyman and our modern (western) everyman; still largely ignorant, crass, willfully uneducated, politically repugnant and/or naive.The conclusion is followed by a whopper of a footnote/reference section with citations.I've mentioned a couple of times that this book is a very dry academic read. I read every word and I'm still not 100% convinced it's not an elaborate joke on the pretentiousness of academia. I found it worthwhile, but I would definitely recommend it only readers who are especially interested.Five stars, but only for readers who are especially invested in the material. The Mediated Mind by Susan Zieger is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late April.I had come in thinking that this book was about alternatives to incarceration, but, no, it's about the consumption and production of media and advertisements (like books, collectible cigarette cards, sobriety medals, and Rorschach ink blots) at a heightened rate during the 19th century. It's fairly interesting and even fun, but it's also extensively and exhaustible sourced: I learned about the hypocrisy of collecting sobriety items if temperance (and public oration) is a reward within itself; the musing, pondersome, solitary activity of smoking; and cigarette cards being designed with literary authors and caricatures, thereby linking on an existing cultural addiction of reading.

When I first started reading this book, I just thought it was going to be like all the rest. Funny, goofy, and imaginative. While it was all those things just as I suspected, there was one thing that I did not expect. *Spoilers!George and Harold's backstories! The moment I saw little Harold and read about how his parents got divorced, his father moving away, his loneliness, and getting bullied all the time, tears came to my eyes. Although, once little George came and saved Harold from the bullies and later they started making their very first comic, my heart was filled with joy. I never suspected that the author would tell me all these things so suddenly! However, this was just what I was hoping for. I always knew that there was some emotional story behind George and Harold meeting each other, and I desperately wanted to know what it was.I would definitely recommend that you don't skip over this book. Even if you're not the type of person that likes emotional stories, you'll still love all the silliness that this novel has to offer. Even the backstory itself still has lots of humor in it!Overall, I thought that this book was very cute, funny, and emotional for anyone who loves this series. It's definitely worth reading, believe me. ;-)

I read this book aloud for my tween sons. We're fans of the series, and we all enjoyed it very much. The pranks were pretty funny and elaborate, and the story could be used as a jumping off point for a conversation about bullying. Do Harold and George go too far in bullying the bullies? What can you do when the principal (or another grown-up) ignores bullying in real life?This book (#9) is by far the longest of the series at 303 pages. By comparison, "Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman" (#5) is the second longest book we own in the series, at 170 pages. Perhaps that's why we didn't like #9 quite as much as usual - it seemed in any case that the first 10 chapters were a little slow.I must add: don't judge a book by its title. As a mom, I was very negative to the series before my boys got their first book of the series as a gift. We read it, and I liked it a million times more than I expected.

I gave my nephew 4 of these for his birthday. My brother let me know they were a huge hit. Kids love these books. Especially if you have a child or relative or loved one who might like a story that is a little silly and irreverent, take the chance and buy at least one of these. Have some fun! I know that my brother also has some fun reading these with his son.

These are just the most fun books for young boys. And there are enough inside jokes that any adult reading it to a child will enjoy it too. My husband has read this and other Dav Pilkey books to our sons for years. I think one of our fondest memories was from when he was deployed and he was reading to the boys over the phone and half the men in his group ended up piled outside his door listening as well and chuckling. Let's face it grown men are really just little boys at heart. ;)I was glad to see Mr. Pilkey return to the series with this book. Too many books forget what little boys like and are like and these books celebrate what makes little boys so rascally and yet so loveable.

So my 4 year old loves these books ever since we saw the movie in theaters. It's gotten him interested in reading and I haven't heard him laugh so much as this series of books. It's very clever and has some jokes for older kids and adults (nothing too crude), but my MIL wanted to read a few after reading these to my oldest son. Just a heads up, since it's a chapter book, younger kids don't quite get the 'one more chapter... please!' doesn't work after you've read 5 chapters and they want to know what's going to happen.

My kid loves the Captain Underpants series. Only two problems though:1) Why does anyone want to read about a cartoon character running around in their underpants?2) My son reads them so fast we have to order in bulk.Seriously, my son used to hate reading but read multiple books in the series at a record pace. I wish I had called Guiness Book of World records but who knew? I didn't even think he would finish one without being forced to read. +1 for the wife. Good decision.

Started buying this series for my husband to read to our toddler on his nights to read! My husband was griping that he only had a few books that he would read to our son because of his own preference so we got a captain underpants and haven't looked back! My husband enjoys reading these to our 3 year old son and our son loves daddy's enthusiasm, voices and excitement reading them! Wonderful buy for any dad's looking for books they enjoy reading as well!

I bought this as a gift for a friend's son, age 8. I don't know him very well and picked it because of how much my daughter enjoys the books in this series. It was a huge hit. The hardcover made it a nice gift, and this kiddo dove right in as soon as he unwrapped it! Turns out he's already a fan of the series and he hadn't read this one. A great response for a reasonably-priced gift. This is not the first time I've given a hardcover book from this series as a gift and it won't be the last!

Their conclusions tend to remark how "inexplicable", "exotic" and irrational African conflicts are. We all know Africa is not a country. Williams takes the next step and not only breaks down the geographic regions but then explores the libraries of past research claiming the roots of African conflict to be either political, economic, ethnic, religious or post-colonial affiliated. As it turns out there is no "one" explanation.Those who research Africa, especially its violent contexts, truly need to stay away from generalized explanations. While Williams still uses the geographic term, "Africa", he admits to the immense diversity of such a project. "War and Conflict in Africa" is split into three sections: context, ingredients and responses (as Williams calls them). The first section dives right in to the vast literature on African conflicts, describing everything from the colonial history to international relations theory as it relates to the continent. Williams then calls the colonial aftermath, ethnicity, greed, religion, politics, land rites etc. the "ingredients" to conflict. Some ingredients promote conflict but very few of them are the roots of conflict.Williams carefully selects different conflicts and reviews the literature and theories related to each including: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, Algeria, Somalia, Rwanda, the DRC and a host of others. This book is not simply a review of the theories, however. Williams comes to his own conclusion that rational politicians eager to preserve or obtain power can be considered a root of most of Africa's conflicts. These poor examples of leadership simply instrumentalize ethnicity, religion and resources to their advantage.In the final section of the book, Williams reviews the progress of various African organizations created to contain or fight conflict. Despite the various peace-keeping and peacemaking initiatives the lack of unified leadership, political will and military professionalism continue to be large hurdles towards a sustainable solution. Power sharing pacts and conflict resolutions too often fell short of lasting peace. The former, as William's shows, simply supported the ruling elites and barely addressed the popular grievances.This leads to a particular thread knitted between the chapters. How beneficial is it to analyze and respond to African conflict through the state-centric approach? What level of analysis actually drives the African conflict environment? The answer probably depends on the country but as ruling elites prove detached from the masses, it could be a different set of society, civil society, business leaders, tribal elders, religious heads or youth movements that hold the key to improving or deciphering African politics.Finally, even in the current context of terrorist paranoia, Paul Williams dedicates barely a few pages to this discussion. In my opinion, this does not weaken his overall arguments but instead is a sign of his overall analytical acumen. Terrorism is nasty, but it should not overwhelm the discussion of conflict in any region. Terrorism has an ideological root but it just as easily manipulates the "ingredients" of conflict for its own cause as any other conflict trend. Too much focus on terrorism leaves the reality of conflict obscured.This is a must read for all those interested in the study of African conflict. The extensive resources touch on all the big names in Africa conflict research. William's focus is on Africa and its people. That is where analysis should begin and end. Too much focus on international "meddlers", international terrorists and the colonial boogeyman is insufficient to describe the whole picture.
