This is nice in some ways because this book is in comic book form which is unusual for books that typically appeal to girls. However the story to me and my child was weird and drug out. It's one I easy said buy too.

I loved this book! The cover was kind of hard to keep on the front, but otherwise the story was fun and none of the pages were torn.

Great book that may help open a discussion on domestic abuse with students.

Inspires my child to read

We first saw this book at our library and checked it out. My 10 year old daughter really loved it and so we bought a copy for ourselves. We both enjoyed reading it together, and she's read it on our own and then she just started reading it again (to me -- which is fun for a change). This is a graphic novel, so much of the story line portrayed through illustration rather than words. I think there is a good balance between imagery and words, given that it is a graphic novel. We've recommended the book to friends and will enjoy repeated readings of it :)

My 8 year old loved it. It's a touching story with beautiful illustrations. It is difficult to read on a Kindle, however.

In an independently run aquarium by the sea, a man claiming to be Neptune runs daily shows and has his Fish Girl tantalize visitors with just enough of a glimpse to keep them coming back. For years, the Fish Girl has believed that the man really is Neptune, god of the sea. But visits from a human girl about her age prompt her to start questioning her world and all that she has known.I was super excited to hear that David Wiesner was making a graphic novel. He is one of my favorite illustrators. This did not disappoint. Wiesner's art is amazing as always. I can't imagine how long this took him to make! Napoli wrote a story that's a little bit of a Little Mermaid tale without any romantic elements. (It's also a little bit of a human slavery tale.) It draws you in slowly, you're not sure at first what to believe. And then you're cheering for a just ending. As a side note, I loved the girl's best friend octopus. It was a great unique choice of companion creature. A beautiful graphic novel great for fans of fantasy stories.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content (the girl always has some strategic hair placement, other creatures around her, etc.). There's a natural disaster that causes some property damage, but no people get physically hurt.

I'm a huge fan of David Wiesner (his book Flotsam had no words at all but is fascinating for all ages; The Three Pigs has just a couple of sentences per page but is mind-bending and interesting for all ages), and this book is a step older, starting around age 8. It's still good for slower readers since there aren't a lot of words on any page; it's just that some are more advanced ("spectacle," "fortunate," "beautiful"). It doesn't have the gorgeous-gorgeous magical images of Flotsam but at first glance is closer to comic book / graphic novel style (you can use Amazon's "look inside" feature to get a sense of them). The magic in this book is once again in its schema-changing story. The fish-girl starts out in a kingdom that seems magical and loving, but over time you notice that all is not as it seems. It's a coming-of-age story in the sense of learning to re-evaluate your own surroundings, branching out even when it's uncomfortable and difficult, and, yes, finally achieving freedom and peace. It's an enjoyable graphic novel on its surface, but I also appreciated the subtle message that at some point you may have to find your own truth rather than relying solely on what other people tell you.

They will see even more clearly how much you care for them, and they will see you as someone who understands them in ways others don't.It is amazing how a majority of people have no idea how to communicate with someone who is suffering from a loss; even people such as those in the medical field who you would think would know what to do.They don't.Here's the thing: After reading this book, it may very well be that you will be the ONLY person in the client's life who truly knows how to properly communicate with a grieving individual--knowing what to do is so important when it comes to helping a client cope and, eventually, heal.When you go to funerals or send condolence cards, you will know what to say and how best to say it. This is a fascinating story of love, betrayal, magic and redemption. Corbett is a cold, hard and determined man. Devon is a kind, caring, lonely and stubborn woman. Corbett has spent his life trying to rebuild his family's reputation that his father ruined by marrying a servant. He's determined to marry a titled lady so that his sons can inherit his title. Devon has spent her life being hidden in the monastery on Corbett's land, wishing she could be free to see the world outside of the monastery. Corbett has dreamed of a brown haired, green eyed woman who needs his help. When he goes to the monastery to get Devon's guardian to be the cook at his castle, he demands that she bring her "granddaughter" with her. Corbett and Devon both feel a pull towards each other, but Corbett treats her like an unwanted servant, which makes Devon fight against being just a lowly servant to him. He really treats her badly, except for being chivalrous enough to not force he into his bed. There is so much other drama playing out within the storyline, like her real identity, that they can never learn to trust in love. It's a brilliant book with interesting characters and a gripping storyline.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

I hate to write a bad review, so I’ll go so far to say that many people might find this enjoyable. However, I need to connect with at least one of the characters to keep my interest, and I found myself wanting to reach into the book and give Devon a good smack. To paraphrase, “how do you annoy me, let me count the ways.” Why Lord Corbett didn’t have her punished for one of the countless times she disobeyed direct orders or talked back to him is incomprehensible. At the time this novel took place, she would have had her tongue cut out or at least had her hung by her thumbs for a few hours. She was brought to his castle as a servant, but spent all her time running and hiding from any chores given to her, yet I’m to believe the other servants didn’t resent her? Please, they didn‘t have enough to do during their 18-hour work day. She also refused point-blank to answer any question put to her, and resented Corbett for not taking anything she said or did on blind faith. What a bozo. I skimmed a great deal to get to the end because my OCD demons won‘t let me discard a book before it‘s finished. Other books in the series concern Corbett’s lost siblings, so Devon won’t be in them. I may continue, but only if they’re free.

Elizabeth Rose is one of my favorite authors, she is amazing. Her storyline and characters are lovable and funny and well defined. Lord of the Blade lives up to my expectations I really enjoy the way she connects her books in a series with family and friends, although each book is a standalone but I like the way they connect it's like watching a series on TV each week. I purchased each book on this series as well as her other books.

Lord Corbett is committed to clearing his family’s name and retaining his title and castle. Left at the monastery as an infant by the Sorcerer Orrick, Devon doesn’t know who she is. The only clue to her true identity is a strange amulet left with her. Corbett senses there is something special about Devon. He is determined to find out who she really is. The attraction between them is strong, but they fight it because love between a noble and a servant is forbidden.Lord of the Blade is an exciting story set in medieval England. It is an engaging fast-paced tale that grabs your attention and holds it. The well done, complex characters draw you into their story. The action and tension as the story develops build from page-turning to nail-biting. Answers to questions and solutions to mysteries will surprise you. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Lord Corbett finally recovered the lands and castle lost by his late father, because he did not marry a noble. His father married for love. Corbett swore to marry nobility so his heirs would not have this problem. The plague had left his castle very short of help, along with the rest of his peers. He went to the monastery and was able to get the mid wife to be his head cook and her 18 year old charge as a kitchen servant. Little did he know it, but now his well laid plans are about to change. The author has combined magic and mystery, treachery and murder, along with honor and love to create a fast read, but well written novel for you to enjoy.
