As a "newbie" to the smoking world, I needed a "BASICS" book. This explains tons of terms like what spices & herbs to use on what meats/fish/poultry, the various cuts of meat, types smokers & kid of smoking, types of wood, temps & times to use, water pans, Dry rubs, Sauces etc. It's a wonderful book with excellent "SIMPLE" recipes to get you started. I recommend it highly.

If you are new to BBQ smoking in my opinion there is no one book you can buy. Everyone that writes one has a point of view. What I have found is you really need a core of three books I have found helpful and then possibly two more. Also there is a lot on the web, but there is one site I have found particularly helpful.I have tried smoking before with bullet grills with some success, but it takes a lot of minding. I finally broke down and bought the Texas Traeger pellet grill just for smoking. I love it. Now the problem is most cookbooks on smoking do not address this type of smoker head on so if you want to lean how to really use one I have found you need to look at a variety of sources. Here is my take:Once you understand temperature in relation to smoke and timing you can translate any indirect recipe to a pellet grill or any other type of smoker. There are some tricks/tips that will enhance the cooking, but in the end it all comes down to temperature and time. Here are the books that I have found most helpful in descending order. I would invest in all five if you are serious about this. I look at two things; technical information and recipes.Slow Fire by Ray "DR. BBQ" Lampe - Excellent from a technical standpoint. A great foundation in terms of understanding smoking (slow cooking) and good basic recipes. It is the first book I would buy.Backyard BBQ The Art of Smokology by Richard W. McPeake - Great in terms of technical. If you study this book along with Lemke's you will really get a handle on the technical aspects of smoking. The recipes are pretty basic, but that is OK if you are new at this.Smoke & Spice by Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison - OK technical, but once you have that down good recipes and good guidance on time and temperature,Championship Barbecue by Paul Kirk - Good technical compliment to the first two above. This however is more a smoke and grilling cookbook as more than half the recipes are grilled ones. He also has a habit of trying to replicate indoor recipes to the grill. I have no idea why you would do that. A lot of the recipes seem like let me throw this against the wall and see what sticks. That said he has some good smoked ones and his mustard slaughters really work, Thought everything using them would taste like a hot dog, but they enhance the flavor with no mustard taste. Obviously I am a little conflicted by this book.BBQ USA by Steven Raichlen _ more of a grilling cookbook, but he has some good smoker recipes. I am a fan of his for grilling; I have five of his cookbooks. Again from a smoking perspective this is the last of the five, but it and his others are great if you grill as well.Last do poke around the website amazingribs.com. It is not just about ribs and has a wealth of information.Do not assume that any of these recipes will be spot on in terms of your particular grill. As all the authors say you have to learn your grill so do not try any recipe for the first time for company. As many of the authors say smoked BBQ will be ready when it is done.Again it is all about learning about time and temperature for your particular grill.

This is a bit of a strange book. It's all about smoking, that part you knew, but its recipes and directions are actually in different sections. For example, a chicken recipe might discuss marinating or brining the chicken, but it won't say anything about temperature to cook at or the temperature to cook the meat to. Other sections in the book discuss cooking temperature, etc. It's a little weird, but I do like the book. The sauces I've made from the book are good, the breakdown of rubs and marinades is interesting.I have three (minor) gripes. First is that the recipe sizes for the sauces are very large (one recipe makes 2.5 quarts, I cut it down by a factor of six). The second is that the organization is a bit unwieldy: a marinade might contain a recipe for a rub on another page that contains a portion of a spice mix from another page. It's a bit jarring. The third is that it's a bit ingredient heavy. There's lemon pepper, garlic salt, corn syrup, Kitchen Bouquet, Pick-A-Peppa sauce, seasoned salt, the list goes on.Four stars. I would definitely buy it again and the recipes are solid, but there are a few issues.*** UPDATE 4/13/2013 ***I should really add that the "Take My Breath Away" BBQ Sauce is amazing and is easily my favorite sauce.

My family LOVES when I bust this book out and start mixing rubs and marinades and mops...the end products are delicious, full of many layers of flavors, while the meat is always fall-apart-tender and moist. If I could, I would rate the recipes a 5, and the writing and organization a 3. So I met in the middle, giving the book an overall 4. But, to me, the recipes are what really matter. I have tried many of the recipes, all are worth the flipping back and forth from the marinade recipe to the rub recipe to mop recipe to the time recommendations, etc. They are also worth the many ingredients that are called for. However, I do not agree with the few 5 star reviews that report that the book is "easy to follow" or for beginners. I believe beginners may get overwhelmed trying to find their way through 3 or 4 recipes just to make one smoked product. Also, I have "guessed" a few times, as I wasn't quite clear on parts of some of the recipes, but everything has always turned out great, so I guess I guessed well!I do not agree, either, with the one and two star reviews which complain that grammar and organization make the book a disaster. I don't recall any of them reporting that they actually tried any of the recipes. How can you rate a cookbook without trying the recipes? That does not seem fair.Just a note also highlighted by other reviewers; the recipes tend to be way too large for the amount a single family would require, but I have taken time to quarter or third them for more appropriate proportions.Ultimately, my family has loved every recipe I have tried, from chicken, to pork (ribs, loin, and pulled), to jambalaya and smoked mushrooms. Smoking meats is somewhat laborious, but oh-so worth it! If you enjoy savory, melt-in-your-mouth smoked meats, it is worth it to give the recipes in this book a try.Recommended!

Very simple ingredient recipe book and one that my lifetime chef liked to use...which in itself tells you this is the book to buy. I borrowed his and after browsing through the book and seeing how simple the recipes were with normal spices, I had to have my own. I have now cooked several different items out of the book and all of them have tasted great and were easy to prepare with the use of this book.

About the Author

A Founding Member of Whitehead Institute, Robert A. Weinberg is a pioneer in cancer research most widely known for his discoveries of the first human oncogene—a gene that causes normal cells to form tumors—and the first tumor suppressor gene. Weinberg, who received his PhD in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969, has held research positions at the Weizmann Institute and the Salk Institute. In 1982, Weinberg helped found Whitehead Institute, joined the faculty as a professor of biology at MIT, and published his landmark paper "Mechanism of Activation of a Human Oncogene" in the journal Nature. In 1999, another major paper, "Creation of Human Tumor Cells with Defined Genetic Elements," was also published in Nature.

I actually first bought and read this book eight years ago and really liked it. I thought it was very technical, but not too technical for a lay audience and did a good job of explaining the "superpowers" a cell must acquire to become cancerous. Then I lent it to one of I my high school biology students who developed an interest in cancer reasearch after I presented a unit on cancer. She also enjoyed the book, though admitted it was a hard read fo her. However, she went on to major in molecular biology at UCLA and did undergrad reasearch on cancer and is now pursuing a PhD in immunology at UCSF and I think this book helped motivate all that. I bought a second copy of this book recently for my dad, who was diagnosed with cancer and trying to learn more about it. He said the book was too difficult for him to follow so maybe best for a lay audience with a solid biology foundation as a good primer for understand cancer. My dad did take biology in college but that was 50 years ago! The field has advanced greatly since then while his memory has not. But for anyone with a good science foundation, this book is manageable and extremely interesting.

I just have finished the book which I bought 3 years ago but then did not read it as the book is hard for me to handle with only a left hand. But after my wife 4 weeks ago were stated having cancer I read it in the past week.Among other reasons I also bought the book because I in many privies read books had seen references to Robert A. Weinberg. The book is good in telling the history concerning solving most of the problems about how the cells groves and increases, and especially why cancer don't stop living, having no finishing age. It's a clear and detailed writing, even though it was a little bit heavy for me as many years have passed since I was in school concerning biology. And I can se that much new knowing has come since then back in the 1960es. But as we in the book go through what's going on in the cells I must say that it's much like thinking concerning programming software for the Pc.And on side 115 is mentioned an interested discovery in 1972 by Jams Watson, who I only remember for the discovery of DNA in 1953.Weinberg finish the book by writing that in the future the successors will look back on these discoveries in the last quarter of the twentieth century as a historical curiosity, but that's only the same which again and again has happened concerning other researches in science. That's nearly always first going to one side and then to the other, and disbelieving what researchers discover to early the others to believe.

This book is best read by those who remember some of their basic biology but this is not strictly required to benefit from the book. The author uses engaging prose to keep the subject interesting and is able to provide simplified, yet compelling, explanations of a complex topic. Highly recommended for anyone who want some insight into cancer and cell biology,

I picked up this book browsing around on my Kindle. Boy what a book! This is one of the most interesting books that I've read. The writing style is active and immediate, fast paced, even exciting as the next link in the chain is discovered. Starting from back in the 1900s Weinberg goes up through the history of conjectures to validated genetic science exploring how the various cancers genetic underpinnings advance the disease. An excellent review is written by Rhoads check this one out first. This book is copyright 1998 so is probably "dated" however Weinberg has another book on "the biology of Cancer" dated 2006 which is probably really good too although I haven't read it but it is $100. Being enthused by Weinberg's writing about this subject I've just downloaded "The Emperor of All Maladies" Copyright 2010 on my Kindle to perhaps learn a little more about this fascinating but tragic subject.A strong message in the book is avoidance is better than cure so DON'T SMOKE!!!! If you do, GIVE IT UP QUICKLY!!!

A close relative of mine is a cancer survivor, and the shadow of this horrific disease has become a new member in our family. Weinberg's book is a quick and very well written primer for the layman on cancer and the history of oncological research. Not only does it contain up to date information about the latest genetic discoveries in the field, but it also presents them in a didatic and lighthearted style only an insider could offer. Reading this book, I felt like having a glimpse of the kind of books that will be written abou cancer in (hopefully) 20 years: books in which all the mechanisms leading to tumor formation will be laid bare for the student, and effective therapies will be available for all kinds of cancer, with minor burden of side effects. Books in which all the suffering caused by cancer nowadays will be as part of medical history as polio is. I felt enpowered by this book and actually enjoyed reading it (the account of how a virus can cause cancer by stealing proto oncogenes from normal cells is fascinating). The only reason I have not given 5 stars is some difficulty in the last chapters due to the complicated naming conventions of genes, but I guess this is a fault of the unfinished status of genetic oncology and my ignorance. If cancer or the history of medical research in general interests you, I strongly recommend this book.

This is a very interesting book about the bio mechanics of cancerous tumorsand possible ways of fighting them, written in a very playful and interesting language.I recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand why do humans develop cancer? Why does it seam to be more prominent these days than in the past, what exactlyhappens in the cell level when it decides to run amok? and finally what should one doto limit the risk of getting cancer. On the down side, I think the book is a bit outdated and can use a new addition. In some places it predicts scientific events which already happened. I also feel thatthere are a bit too many Genes names for the casual reader to stomach.

Preston George's pictures of the 1940's and early 1950's steam era in Oklahoma are legendary. Now they are brought together in this book which displays them with good reproduction and a story with each photo. None of the photos are shrunk to being too small, instead are each given one page each. George covered all the major railroads in Oklahoma, except the MIssouri Pacific, and some of the short lines, with 90% of the photos being steam, the other 10% being 1st generation diesels. Most of his shots are of the "wedge" variety with many also having scenery in the shot. The pictures are dated and placed in their locations with only a couple saying they didn't know where or when it was taken. I even found one picture taken on the day I was born, which was neat. The only criticism I have is a couple of factual mistakes in the history of Okahoma railroading, like saying the Missouri Pacific had no presence in Oklahoma (it had a main line in the north-east, entering at Coffeyville, Kansas and exiting at Van Buren, Arkansas.) The prose was written by Augustus Veenendaal who is from Europe and could have been proofed for factual mistakes by someone who knows Oklahoma railroads. The photos are wonderful. You should get this book if you are a steam locomotive fan no matter your location.

This book of rare steam era photos taken across Oklahoma by Preston George should be a welcome addition to those with an interest in steam railroads. To those of us who grew up in Oklahoma after the demise of steam, but are familiar with many of the photo locations, it is a must-have. Each of the approximately 150 photos fills a page, along with informative captions. Most photos are steam locomotives, but there are also a few early diesels, interurban, and depots. A short illustrated history of Oklahoma railroads with maps and an afterward by Preston George's daughter detailing his life add interest. I have discovered a couple of errors in the captions concerning an engine number and incorrect engine type, but I still recommend this book highly.

Preston George did an amazing job on taking these photos of steam locomotives. I highly recommend it to train lovers and rail fans. I really enjoyed reading about the history of the railroads in Oklahoma and other parts of the southwest U.S. at the beginning. The photos have good descriptions and at the end there's a section talking about the life of Preston George which is awesome.

Very pleased with this book and very interested in the photographs that are in it.

Nice book, great photos from a bygone era

Excellent book for the train lover.

Received timely and as advertised.

It was an excellent black and white record of the end of the age of steam in Oklahoma - a state not usually recorded in depth like this.

My son loves Garfield and he went from a student in "reading recovery" at school (that means below grade level) to a student who reads 2-3 grades above his grade level because of his desire to read MORE Garfield than I was willing to read to him at night. Luckily, unlike many book series, this series goes on forever! And Jim Davis, bless his heart, has made it so affordable to collect his books in these fat cat 3-packs (3 books in one cover) and Amazon has made it even MORE affordable. Unlike some books made for kids (like Cap'n Underpants, for example) there are no misspelled words as the author tries to mimic what a kid's comic would look like, there is little if any violence like in some comic books, no scantily clad comic character women, no racey themes are statements.... It's just perfect for a kid in elementary school learning to read... and now and then, I'll read a few pages... and grandma loves to steal one, too... so it's just nice for all ages. So glad we stumbled on to these! It's a long-lived interest that has helped him so much!

I thought these books were great! They were hilarious and I understood all of the jokes. I highly reccomend these books for grades 3-8. These books are really popular at my middle school. I love how they combined three of the books into one. I also love how Garfield insultes Jon’s intellect. By the way this was only thing I got from my parents for Christmas!!! I will ask my mom to buy me more for my birthday as the birthday gift. Jim Davis is my favorite author.(This is probably the only thing that I will probably get for my birthday*sigh*)

Oh My Dear Fat Sarcastic, Non-Empathic Garfield, How You do Make My Son and Me Guffaw with Laughter!I have been purchasing these wonderful FAT CAT 3-PACKS for quite some time. My son is twelve and has been reading GarfieldFat Cat since he was a Tot, and continues reading as a "Tween." For those who don't know, the book comes as one thick book, thus the "3-pack" although to be perfectly honest, that could seem to be a bit misleading. My first purchase many years ago had me thinking I was getting three books. I was very happy when I saw just how thick (a good inch or more) the big soft bound comic strip book was; so, no complaints here.He had asked for Volume 1, but I couldn't understand why it was so expensive at some places and yet hard to find at others. Well, I found GARFIELD FAT CAT 3-PACK VOL 1 here, and decided to buy it used. It arrived in about two weeks in almost perfect/new condition.

I had no idea this existed until I heard it mentioned on Family Guy fairly recently. It is a taste creative genius that I did not expect from this old family classic comic writer. I love when you find these diamonds in a sea of norms. This was an artist that wanted to try something else because he can. He earned it. Thank you, Jim and everyone else that contributed.

Ordered to replace the one the kids wore out at my parents' place-- that we had from when I was a kid!Got the package, opened it up, and I thought my five year old son was going to explode. (With joy.) Once he calmed down enough to be understandable, he was very happy that the "Great Garfield book from grandma and granpa's!" is now at our house.Down side: he is even more of a Garfield fanboy than before.

I bought this book as a gift for my 8-year-old grandson who adores Garfield. He loved it! I was a bit anxious at first since they are labeled "graphic," but they are completely fine. They read just like one of his cartoons. They just happen to be in a book form.

I have been buying the separate Garfield books as they are released in Kindle format on Amazon, but for some reason seven random volumes (2,3,4,19,26,37,38) are restricted to the USA only. I have tried contacting Amazon and the publishers several times but no one can provide an answer why. The complete set of separate Garfield books can currently only be bought in the USA, and I have wasted my money. If you plan to buy a collection of Garfield books, buy the more recent 'Garfield Complete Works' instead.

I purchased for my 11 year old son who is obsessed with Garfield. This book is filled with classic Garfield comics, just like in the "Funny" Section of the Sunday paper, only now all in one place. We own several volumes of the Garfield Fat Pack books, and he said so far this is his favorite. I love that I can find on Amazon where I cannot find in stores locally. Well priced and fast shipping was an added bonus as this mom forgot as a Christmas gift. It arrived in plenty of time.
