Review

“Deeply moving . . . Unforgettable.” (Wall Street Journal)“A masterpiece.” (Chicago Tribune)“Magnificent.” (Vanity Fair)“Epic . . . Heartfelt . . . An enormously satisfying story about a dog and the man who believed in him.” (Carol Memmott USA Today)“Fascinating . . . Sweeping . . . Expertly told . . . [Orlean] may persuade even the most hardened skeptic that Rin Tin Tin belongs on Mount Rushmore with George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt, or at least somewhere nearby with John Wayne and Seabiscuit.” (Jennifer Schuessler The New York Times Book Review)“A story of magnificent obsession. Nearly a decade in the making, combining worldwide research with personal connection, it offers the kind of satisfactions you only get when an impeccable writer gets hold of one heck of a story.” (Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times)“Stunning . . . Truly exceptional . . . A book so moving it melted the heart of at least this one dogged Lassie lover . . . . Calling Rin Tin Tin the story of a dog is like calling Moby-Dick the story of a whale.” (Meredith Maran The Boston Globe)“Susan Orlean has written a book about how an orphaned dog became part of millions of households, and hearts, in a way that may reveal the changing bonds between humans and animals, too. . . . One of the many pleasures of this book is the historical breadth of the story.” (Scott Simon NPR’s Weekend Edition)“An improbably fascinating tale of one of the first canine celebrities, the times that catapulted him to fame, and the legacy that endures.” (People magazine's "Great Fall Reads")“Brilliant . . . If there were any book she was born to write, it's this one. The product of years of dogged research, it's her magnum opus, a work filled with fascinating stories . . . [and] stunning prose that is both compassionate and perceptive.” (Michael Schaub NPR)

Surprisingly boring!I bought the book because of all the great reviews. No one said it would be dull as dirt. I love German Shepherds and have had many, so, I thought this would be a good book for me. It really gets hard to take when the author puts herself into the story. The ending is supposed to be a tearjerker, about how she almost gets a puppy for herself. I was unmoved to say the least. By then I just couldn't wait to be done with the book. She took an interesting story and beat the life out of it. Don't waste your time or money. Just get a GS puppy instead.

Susan Orlean, who admits being a fan of the original Rin Tin Tin long ago, has constructed a fascinating story about the dog and his master, Lee Duncan, who found the dog in France near the end of WWI. Duncan brought him back to America after the war, trained him remarkably well, and found Rin Tin Tin’s niche in silent movies. Duncan and “Rinty” make the transition from silent films to the “talkies” and much later to TV when that new and startling medium makes its appearance in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The companies that sponsored such shows as Rin Tin Tin and Lassie were quick to capitalize on the merchandizing possibilities and wasted no time creating food, uniforms, “authentic dog souvenirs” and assorted trinkets that could be sold to the families of child viewers of the shows. Later in life Lee Duncan seems to be a flawed character, relating only to Rinty and the dog’s prodigy instead of his wife and daughter. He has an elaborate “memory room” filled with news clippings to which he can retreat and relive those old times where he had fame and fortune with his beloved dog. Near the end of the book, we learn what happened to the woman who took over the Rin Tin Tin franchise of raising and training descendants of the original dog and the folks in Hollywood who never gave up hope of filming that final and all-encompassing Rinty masterpiece. The lawsuits fly fast and furious and, as usually is the case, only the lawyers are making out like bandits. Nevertheless, it’s a warm and inspiring story. Everyone who loves dogs (like I do) would be well served to read and enjoy this book.

Interesting look at the Rin Tin Tin phenomenon from the silent film to talkies to the tv show. The book explores Rin Tin Tin's original owner, Lee Duncan's life, from at one point being abandoned by his mother in an orphanage to finding the German Shepherd puppies in a bombed out kennel in WWI Germany. Duncan's attachment to the dog is extraordinary, so much so that at one point his first wife named the dog as correspondent in their divorce. Duncan's determination to tell the story of the dog by knocking on doors in Hollywood and finally getting picked up by Warner Brothers is the typical Hollywood star discovery story but in this case, it was true. However, after the success of the films, the stories did not transition as well to the sound era but Duncan never seemed to give up. He continued breeding the dogs, looking for another that had the personality of the first, but never seeming to find it, and eventually died broke. He always wanted to tell the original story of the finding of Rin Tin Tin in that bombed out kennel and Rin Tin Tin's rise to fame but never got to. The story transitions to Herbert Leonard who produced the Rin Tin Tin tv series and always wanted to produce another tv series once the original one was cancelled. Then there is Daphne Hereford, who started with 4 puppies who were descendents of the original Rin Tin Tin and who is continuing the blood line with Rin Tin Tin XII. It is a fascinating story as the author visited many of the locations where Rin Tin Tin and/or Duncan were connected to the small town in France where Duncan found the puppy to the Corriganville ranch where the tv series was shot to the Riverside library where all of Duncan's papers from his "Memory Room" are stored. Interviews with Duncan's daughter and those involved in the tv series as well as Daphne Hereford gives the book a well-rounded look at the story of Rin Tin Tin from WWI to the present day. I found the initial part on the original Rin Tin Tin the most interesting as well as Duncan's persistent in keeping the legend of Rin Tin Tin alive. Once the book got into the television series, it seemed the people involved were more concerned about making money than preserving the Rin Tin Tin legacy. Additionally the book did wander off into the history of dogs in American homes in the 20th century, some of which had no relation to the Rin Tin Tin story at all and could have been covered in another book. Additionally, I would have liked lots more photographs as they were barely existent in the book. A complete filmography, tv list of all the appearances Rin Tin Tin or dogs called Rin Tin Tin would have also made the book more complete.

This is a short book of short jokes, covering a broad range of mathematical levels. For example, it starts with "Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9" and includes "What is big, gray, and has integer coefficients? An elephantine equation". It includes many old classics, but it also has many jokes I hadn't hear of. I found it very pleasant to read, and I look forward to using some of these jokes in my classes! The jokes in this book are jokes in the usual sense. For mathematically related anecdotes, Howard Eves' "In mathematical circles" series, and Steven Krantz's "Mathematical Apocrypha" and "Mathematical Apocrypha Redux" are all good. For humorous mathematical essays, there is Colin Adams' "Riot at the Calc Exam".

As a math lover, who studied as an engineer, and became a computer programmer i thought there were a lot of really funny jokes in here. There are a number of adult humor ones though so not sure i will let my kids who like math as well read it.

I love "Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks"!! These jokes are hilarious, with no profanity or vulgarity, and yet some of the joke are on the adult level. It's like a Dad joke book, where all the Dad jokes center around math terms and concepts. I cannot recommend this enough for the Dad in your family. :-)

My brother loved this. And the section on "3 Dudes" made me laugh out loud (partly because I was engineering before I was math so the comparisons made sense). Some of the jokes were incomprehensible...possibly because they were outside my field. But I think most Math/Science folks will find enough pertinent content, regardless of their area of expertise, to tickle their funny bones.

This gift was for my son who is an Honor's Math Teacher at Central High School in Phoenix, Az.He loves it and has already found fun things to test that his students can think outside the box. Thanks for this offering. Greatly appreciated.

Gave this as a gift for my mathy husband. He read some of the jokes out loud, some were funny, some corny, some I had no idea...the jokes run the gamut from basic one liners to involved stories. It seems to me that it is more for adults and older kids of the mathy persuasion.

My granddaughter loved this book.

My mathematician husband wasn't impressed much and it's somewhere around here not getting look at.

Awesome read and it came on time. I suggest buying a seperate score because the print is tiny for the music

A brilliant and and complete discussion of "Afternoon of a faun". Includes complete score with references to almost`all the same sources used as basis for the new Barenreiter Urtext edition, complete analysis of the score, text of the Mallarme poem and numerous historical and analytical articles. Complete, informative and scholarly. Highly recommended.

A must have for serious students and conductors. I don't think the Baerenreiter edition has all the essays and etc that this edition does.

This is just a study score, I was expecting a full sized score. Beside the size, it is a great full score.

Theodore Roosevelt... Harvard graduate, historian, New York state assemblyman; rancher, Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Commanding officer of the "Rough Riders;" war hero; Governor of New York; Vice President, and then President of the United States. All of these accomplishments by the time this extraordinary man reached 42 years of age. Theodore Roosevelt's historical achievements are indeed most impressive! In his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," biographer Edmund Morris masterfully chronicles the life of this mercurial, complex, and paradoxical man who became the 26th President of the United States.Morris's brilliant narrative depicts Theodore Roosevelt as a man who towered over his world. Yet who would have guessed at future greatness for this, the oldest son of one of New York's wealthiest and most respected families? A sickly child, afflicted with constant bouts of asthma and chronic diarrhea, he is seen by his parents as a child "with the mind, but not the body..." for high achievement. But the young Roosevelt senses his own potential for greatness and resolves to strive mightily to achieve it...Throughout his life, TR is a man of many paradoxes. Largely self-educated, he eventually attends Harvard University, from which he graduates magna cum laude in 1880 with a Phi Beta Kappa key in one hand and a membership in Porcellain, Harvard's most prestigious social club, in the other. The son of a wealthy philanthropist, he eschews the traditional, genteel, upper-class lifestyle in favor of the rough-and-tumble of New York politics. A member of the Republican party, he champions progressive reform. By age 26, he has served two terms in the New York state assembly; has earned the begrudging respect of his colleagues; and has authored several significant pieces of reform legislation. After the death of his first wife, Alice Lee Hathaway Roosevelt, and his mother, Mittie (both women die on the same day, in the same house) TR flees New York, heading to the harsh, uncompromising Dakota Badlands to earn his living as a cattle rancher and writer of history books. Here, in this barren country, a startling transformation takes place. The thin, sickly youth of sallow skin and frail constitution becomes the muscular, tanned, robustly healthy man known to history."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" vividly demonstrates how this intensely energetic politician used his forceful personality in the cause of badly needed reform at all levels of American government. As Morris points out, Roosevelt puts his personal stamp on nearly everything he undertakes. As Civil Service Commissioner during the Harrison administration, he publicly - some say bumptiously - investigates claims of graft and corruption within the Civil Service. He alienates many colleagues, but achieves lasting results. During his tenure, the Civil Service expands dramatically, despite fierce political opposition. The same holds true for TR's tenures as president of the New York City Police Commission (1895-97) and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1897-98.)In 1898 a series of unexpected events propels TR to national prominence. When war breaks out between the United States and Spain, TR asks for and receives commission in the New York National Guard. Soon he has assembled a tough group of cavalrymen called the "Rough Riders" - friends from his days at Harvard and in the old west. On July 1, 1898, TR and his grizzled band of soldiers will enter the pantheon of American heroes at a place in Cuba called San Juan Hill...After the Spanish-American War, TR returns to New York and runs for Governor. After a tough, closely fought campaign that features former "Rough Riders" endorsing their candidate, TR is elected by a razor-thin margin of 18,000 votes out of nearly 1.1. million votes cast. TR will only spend a year in the governor's mansion, though. By 1900, New York's "old pols" have had enough of Roosevelt's attempts to force progressive reforms through a recalcitrant, conservative New York legislature. Considering TR "too dangerous" to keep on as governor, they make an arrangement to get Roosevelt on the national ticket. McKinley agrees, and an Roosevelt enthusiastically becomes McKinley's running mate.In November 1900, McKinley easily wins re-election and Theodore Roosevelt becomes Vice President of the United States. Ten months later, on September 6, 1901, at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, President William McKinley is gunned down by a young anarchist...Not since I read William Manchester's two-volume "The Last Lion" biography of Winston Churchill have I read a book that's as good as "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt." Make no mistake: this book is as good as biography gets! Here is the powerfully eloquent story of one of the most gifted and controversial men of the twentieth century, and perhaps even of all time."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" reads almost like a novel. I haven't found a single part of this book that I would classify as "dry" or boring. In fact I found it pretty hard to put down once I started reading it. Part of the reason for that, I suppose, is because TR's life was so darned fascinating to begin with; but give Edmund Morris his due. He has told the story of Theodore Roosevelt with tremendous style and panache."The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" is a fair and balanced biography, although Edmund Morris displays an obvious affection for his subject. Morris combines an intellectually stimulating and literate historical narrative with brilliantly insightful historical analysis. Roosevelt's less attractive qualities - his impulsiveness, his emotionalism, and his attempts at self glorification among others - all receive full coverage in this masterful book.Edmund Morris has written an extremely readable, highly entertaining, and factually sound biography. In "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," he completely captures the essence of this towering early twentieth century figure, making him totally relevant to today's readers. "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" is a biography that's indeed very well worth reading!

Written by a brilliant biographer, this book traces the early life of Roosevelt from 1858 to 1901. We see him as a precocious child of a New York aristocratic family, learn of his fascination with nature, particularly insects, and later his travels with parents to the Continent. We see his inquiring, thorough mind as an adolescent, his determination to be healthy and so learning to box; and more travel with his family to the Middle East and Africa, where he is exposed to not only new cultures, but strenuous travel. Eventually he enters Harvard where he finds strengths in science, geography and history shine and weaknesses in math and Latin and Greek; and considers becoming a scientists. He continues to build his body and becomes extremely self-disciplined. Throughout his youth his father is closest to him; and the death of his father is shattering to him. He continues to work on his body-building, taking up rowing until he is tan and forcing himself physically, and meets Alice Hathaway Lee. Out of college, he begins to reconsider his eventual occupation, drawn to politics. During a winter trip to Maine, his health improved; and he discovered he particularly liked talking to those who worked and lived there –“real men.” These growing years thus set the tone for a lifetime of pushing himself to be physically fit, exploring the extremes of climate and nature’s challenges, talking and learning from the “common man” in each environment he travels and lives in. He discovers the joy of hunting, writing history (especially naval history), ranching and cattle raising, fighting and being a soldier and leader of fighting men. We see him plunge into life, from the “Wild West”—the Dakotas—to the jungles of Cuba. His robust enthusiasm for life grows, his fascination with politics grows, his confidence and magnetism grow. He climbs up the political ladder until he becomes the “Boy Governor” of New York, and later Vice-President of the United States-- just as McKinley is shot and dies. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became President.

There's not really much I can add to the other tons of glowing reports on this book, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in Teddy (he hated being called that!) Roosevelt to read it.I don't believe you need to be a history buff to get into this book, but in all likelihood only those who have such an interest will pick it up. I found it so interesting that I immediately downloaded the second book in the series, "Theodore Rex."There were so many things to enjoy about this book. Not only was the writing absolutely fluid, but it was also written in such a way as to appeal to a broad audience. Though a scholarly work, it wasn't written to appeal only to graduate students in history, but instead it was written to appeal to the masses. The photos were a wonderful addition, as well. This book was amply researched and I was so happy to see all the original letters, diaries, and newspapers quoted. If you really want to get to know Theodore Roosevelt, then read this book! As I stated previously, I'm on the second one in the series and as soon as that's done I'm buying the third. I have over 120 ebooks on my tablet, and I methodically read them in alphabetical order, but when I downloaded "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" I read the first few pages and couldn't put it down. I read a great many books on a variety of topics, but this is really one of those rare books which has kept me spellbound and not a little disappointed when it ended.

This book has great material if you're interested in black & white, and it has some good things to offer even for people who want to work in color. The book starts off on the wrong foot, but then it becomes very useful beginning in Chapter 3. It's clearly written, comprehensive and includes useful detail.Chapter 1 is a portfolio of the author's work. Chapter 2 is about his multi-computer setup and all the hard drives he has in RAID arrays, etc. Swell, but tell us what the practical needs are for amateurs and beginning pro's, please. After looking at his portfolio and reading his gloat you're wondering whether this book is just an ego trip for Mr. Diallo. But in Chapter 3 he reviews color management and gets into the details about device profiles. If you're reading about digital B&W you've probably already read about color management, but this book explains it better than anything else I've read. Chapter 4 gets into examples of conversions from digital color to B&W. There's good info on scanning and scanning software, which is an unexpected bonus if you have a collection of negatives from your pre-digital life.Chapter 5 covers the use of Photoshop for B&W. It summarizes the main tools photographers should learn and incluuds some examples of how to use them, and that chapter is as useful for color as it is for B&W. Chapter 6 goes into the details on B&W printing, including the use for third part ink sets for Epson printers and the use of raster imaging processors (RIPs). Again, the text is clearly written even as it goes into detail. Chapter 7 covers digital workflow and includes a couple of useful end-to-end examples. There's an excellent discussion of why and how to use sharpening. Chapters 8 and 9 will be of interest to people interesting in selling their work. Chapter 8 on limited editions could be condensed to about 5 pages by removing redundant text, but it does contain clear and presumably useful advice. Chapter 9 on building a portfolio is detailed and includes a short section on building a web site for displaying one's portfolio. The advice is certainly useful for someone hoping to sell his or her work as fine art. There's a good reference guide at the back with links to various sources of ink, paper, software, etc. There are two flaws that should be corrected in a future update/new edition: The most serious flaw is that the illustrations in the book are small and sometimes rather dark, so it's hard to verify the points Mr. Diallo makes in the text. He even ackmowledges their shortcomings in thhe text. The publisher could learn a lot from looking at the excellent quality of the illustrations printed in books on photography published by Rocky Nook. Mr. Diallo posts full sized versions of the photos for download from the book's website, but each one has to be downloaded one at a time. That's really a kludge. In a book about photography, the photos should be printed well enough so that the reader can see what Mr. Diallo is writing about! And his examples should be on a CD included with the book so the reader can apply the lessons, especially the lessons in Chapter 5 about using Photoshop for Black & White. The inadequately printed illustrations means 4 stars, not 5.(A minor quibble: The text about a photo is often on the page before the photo itself. But that's a small matter compared to the poorly reproduced photos themselves.)The second flaw is inevitable. The book was published at the end of 2007 and it covers both software and hardware (printers, scanners, spectrophotometers) very well. That information is getting out of date as of the end of 2009. For example the author describes how to use Photoshop CS3, but the current version is CS4; the Epson 2400 has been replaced by the 2880 and the 3800 by the 3880. It's not a problem for the next year or so (through 2010), but eventually the product-specific information will get stale. Hopefully there will be a new edition -- maybe even one with well-reproduced illustrations and a CD.Still, the techniques the author describes won't get stale, so if you're interested in digital B&W, this is a very good choice.

Warning: This book is NOT for you if your primary interest is truly that of "mastering" digital black and white photography and printing.Any time a book title includes the words "mastering" or "ultimate" my smell-o-rama sensor automatically activates. Such sweeping and arrogant suggestions are always over-cooked. "Mastering Digital Black and White" is no exception. The book is nicely printed and features very good color illustrations, making many of Diallo's image processing points easy to follow. The overall design is easy on the eyes but has that independently-produced look due mainly to the lack of margins throughout the book.I estimate that roughly only 15%-20% of the book's 357 content pages have any direct bearing on the title subject of "black and white", with many of these pages buried like Easter eggs inside broader topics. Like nearly all of the dozens of kindred books on digital printing and digital photography most of this book's content deals with basic tech and photo topics, survey-level smatterings of "current" software and printers, and little side-bars. While Diallo presents these topics interestingly and with good subject matter authority they can be found in many other basic books and have a rather short freshness life. All this is not to say that the book is without merit. Although he does indeed mow some well-trimmed lawns Diallo offers some rather unique material and interesting perspectives. In chapter 8, titled "The Limited Edition", Diallo presents a good summary of the controversial topic of artificially editioning digital prints. Like other chapters, however, that same chapter manages to meander into other territories (papers, print storage, archival ratings) before it's terminated. Chapter 9, "The Portfolio", also nicely covers a topic that many will find interesting; that of constructing and presenting a contiguous portfolio of work. Diallo also features some interesting little interviewsIn summary, this book delivers very little of what its title promises. Instead, it's really more of an intermediate-level general book on Photoshop and ink jet printing circa 2007. Nevertheless I really did enjoyed reading it, more so than most of its peers that I've read. But, like so many of its peers, its value is diluted by trying to cover far too much ground. I was disappointed that the title represented yet another bait-and-switch.The market for the truly specialized "Digital Black and White Photography and Printing" work remains open. Next!

I had hoped to find some basics in this book for digital B&W, but I found mostly over-the-top information that was of no use to me. I have enjoyed photography as a hobby for over 40 years, so I am not new to it. Instead of taking the reader thru the basics and then following with more advanced info, the writer hits the reader with some of the most technical aspects of digital photopraphy. This book might be okay for someone who considers themself a very advanced amature or a wannabe pro. This is not a book for someone looking for basic digital B&W help. I got the impression that the author has all of this knowledge and is trying to impress the reader with how much he knows.
