Review

“Mishima is famous both for writing and for dying. Or, strictly, for attempting hara-kiri. Perhaps surprising, then, is that Star is about shooting a blockbuster: not an Ozu or a Mizoguchi but a cheap Yakuza flick. Mishima himself starred in Afraid to Die, Yukoku, Black Lizard, and Hitokiri and knew first-hand his subject the vapidity of fame. Startling, is its lack of artifice: yielding grace from pulp.” - Oscar Mardell, 3:AM Magazine“This 1961 novel is finally getting the translation it has so long deserved. The psychologically complex story of Rikio Mizuno, young star of a series of gangster films, is based in part on Mishima’s own experiences as an actor. This is a landmark novel of 20th century Japan, and you no longer have to learn Japanese to read it.” - Jeff Somers, Barnes and Noble“Mishima nicely captures the alter-world of stardom―a sharp little novella.” - Complete Review“Mishima’s ethereal 1961 novel, published for the first time in English, showcases the strains of fame on a young movie star. Mishima is a master of the psychological: this nimble novella about the costs and delusions of constant public attention will resonate with readers.” - Publishers Weekly“Written shortly after Mishima himself starred in the yakuza-centered Afraid to Die, his slim novella―smoothly translated into English for the first time by prize-winning Sam Bett―is a raw, scathing examination of fame.” - Terry Hong, The Booklist Reader“Mishima is like Stendhal in his precise psychological analyses, like Dostoevsky in his explorations of darkly destructive personalities.” - The Christian Science Monitor“Mishima was one of literature’s great romantics.” - Jay McInerney, The New York Times“This pitch-perfect novella from Yukio Mishima tells the story of a young film star disenchanted with the trappings of fame. Drawing on his own experiences as an actor, Mishima’s Star is a stunning addition to the oeuvre of one of postwar Japan’s greatest storytellers.” - Thomas Gebremedhin, WSJ Magazine“There may be no writer more autobiographical than Yukio Mishima. He resembles Ce´line and Genet, writers who were not political writers but who were working out the crisis of being alive, the crisis of experience itself. That’s precisely the way it is transcendent―it goes beyond the visible world into a world in which being alive makes sense.” - Philip Glass

***5 ‘Milkshakes & Tube Socks’ Stars***Ok. Question first?Who else winced while reading steps one through three??Anyone? Anyone?Cause I sure did. Because even I knew that the pitfalls could be varied and many and bring about all kinds of issues, but even as I was wincing I was already needing to see how everything played out with Bram and Julia and I wasn’t disappointed in anyway. I winced, I laughed, I rolled my eyes and I swooned as these two danced around and towards each other ~ slowly, Oh, so, slowly ~ and was kind of unhappy that there were no more words to read because I really wanted to spend more time with both of them and find out what else they’d be getting up to.I loved Julia and Bram. Julia is that compelling mix of shy, thoughtful sassy and snarky with a good dose of an extremely observant wallflower (most of the time). She finds solace in facts and logic, which sometimes blind her to the most obvious things and yet, she isn’t removed from the world or emotions, she just holds them at arm’s length. Bram is cocky and yet he owns it to such an extent that after awhile it comes off as endearing more than arrogant ~ though there are times where that line is very, very fine. He’s charming and intelligent and has an extremely golden heart that he shares with only those he calls his own.Julia and Bram’s journey to their HEA was a whole lot of slow burn/opposites attract goodness. Part of the fun was that while they were friends, they still didn’t KNOW each other, so watching as they truly got to know each other was a lot of fun. And though it was all kinds of slow burn, the chemistry between them was intense, so when things finally stopped being slow, it was all kinds of smexy goodness and just showed that they were a perfect match in every way. As for the roadblock in their journey, as far as I’m concerned they were both right and wrong. I saw both sides of the issue and couldn’t blame either for their feelings. Thankfully, they both figure things out and loved where they ended up.I’m a #fangirl of the author’s, and while I do love her more serious side, her RomComs are my catnip and this one was all kinds of awesomeness. From the way the story played out to the interesting situations that occur throughout the story to Julia and Bram themselves, this was a great story. But, the cherry on top of this sundae belongs to three of the supporting cast of characters. Roarke, Rath and Linus were kind of everything. These three brought so much to the story, I’m crossing my toes that they will be getting their own books down the road because I simply NEED more of all of them!~ Copy provided by the author via InkSlinger PR & voluntarily reviewed ~

Romcoms are always hit or miss for me. Either I love them – generally because the humor is smart and there is plenty of emotional connection to the characters – or I hate them because the humor is too on the nose, too brash, too obvious for me. Add to that my inability to connect with the characters in a meaningful way and The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend’s Sister was a dud.I knew within the first few chapters that this book wasn’t for me, but I had hoped I would find something to love as I pushed through. I had a hard time feeling the connection between Julia and Bram for most of the book. There were some scenes where the chemistry was strong, and I thought the book was turning the corner, but then we’d quickly go back to the same often cringe-worthy interactions. What I think really soured me on this book was the disconnect between the maturity level of the characters and their supposed success in their fields. I had a hard time reconciling the fact that a bunch of overgrown frat boys were really capable of running the empires they’d amassed. That immaturity bled into the way Bram dealt with his feeling toward Julia and overall left me with an unpleasant impression of who he was.All that being said, I could see why someone who prefers romcoms would enjoy this book. The conflict is minimal, the humor is obvious, and the interaction between the boys was fun. My distaste for The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend’s Sister was definitely a ME issue, and I will own that. I have great respect for Meghan Quinn’s more serious works, but I’m quickly finding her romcoms aren’t for me. I will definitely continue reading some of her work but will be more selective of checking out the subgenre.

I have to say, I'm loving this tradition of a new Meghan Quinn release being the first book I review for the year. Her books are always a breath of fresh air, The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend's Sister no exception, so it's fitting to always start off my year. The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend's Sister is funny, witty and all out swoon worthy. It has just about everything you would want from a romantic comedy. I laughed out loud, internally chuckled and fell completely in love with Bram and Julia."Why are you impossible to resist?" "Because we're soul mates, and when you're soul mates, your hearts connect on many levels, which makes it impossible to resist each other."Â Yeah. That right there. SWOON WORTHY. Oh, Bram. My favorite thing about these two is that while it might have taken a really long time for them to figure it out together, Bram knew what he wanted and made sure he went after it. No matter how long it took or how frustrating the path turned.I also really enjoyed the whole dating system that Julia had going on. Adding that into the story and then having Bram go through the process really added to the story and allowed us to get to know both of them better. If you want to laugh and fall in love at the same time then you need to pick up The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend's Sister right now! Start your new year off with a witty bang.
