Review

“[Tess of the D’Urbervilles is] Hardy’s finest, most complex and most notorious novel . . . The novel is not a mere plea for compassion for the eternal victim, though that is the banner it flies. It also involves a profound questioning of contemporary morality.” –from the Introduction by Patricia Ingham

About the Author

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) immortalized the site of his birth—Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester—in his writing. Delicate as a child, he was taught at home by his mother before he attended grammar school. At sixteen, Hardy was apprenticed to an architect, and for many years, architecture was his profession; in his spare time, he pursued his first and last literary love, poetry. Finally convinced that he could earn his living as an author, he retired from architecture, married, and devoted himself to writing. An extremely productive novelist, Hardy published an important book every year or two. In 1896, disturbed by the public outcry over the unconventional subjects of his two greatest novels—Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure—he announced that he was giving up fiction and afterward produced only poetry. In later years, he received many honors. He was buried in Poet’s Corner, in Westminster Abbey. It was as a poet that he wished to be remembered, but today critics regard his novels as his most memorable contribution to English literature for their psychological insight, decisive delineation of character, and profound presentation of tragedy.Tim Dolin teaches English at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales. Margaret R. Higonnet teaches English and Comparative Literature at the University of Connecticut.

I read this in a book club and it's not something I would typically read but I am glad I did. This is the story of Tess Derbyfield. When we first meet her she is 16 years old living in poverty with her alcoholic parents. Her father has just learned that he has lineage dating back to the dUrbervilles, a royal family. Upon hearing this, they want to send their oldest daughter, Tess, off to a neighboring town where a family lives that has the d'Urberville name to become a servant and perhaps claim title to the d'Urberville name and even marry a wealthy gentleman. What they do not know is this family only adopted the d'Urberville name to further their business endeavors.Upon first meeting Alec, the sham d'Urberville, Tess's life just goes from bad to worse. She meets one tragedy after another, some caused by fate, some caused by bad decisions. This books leaves you feeling sad and hopeless but is a critique on the way women were treated in 1890's Victorian England. This book had good characters but I thought the development was weak. Harry uses great description of land and locations to where you feel fully immersed in the world of his creation. This story is not for everyone. There are points where you will cry and there are points where you are on the edge of your seat just hoping that the stars will align and fate will come through for Tess.

It was wonderful to return to this classic work of literature that I read during my high school years. The narrator spoke with an English accent which was perfect for this story. The only liberty she took was to make contractions for Thomas Hardy’s two words.Hardy’s depiction of Tess was magnificent to the extent that we, his readers, really knew her complex being far more completely than we would know any living person or persons depicted in contemporary novels.I enjoyed both hearing the Audible plus following the written text of the novel. I have other classic works of literature lined up to read after this incredible work of art.

I have bought several of the Penguin Classics Hardcover series. Each cover is beautifully done and the novels themselves are excellent quality. The bookstores tend to sell these editions for $25.00, so I'm always excited to see them on this site for roughly half the price. As a couple of others have stated, the covers look great on bookshelves. I look forward to buying more from this collection. As for the novel itself, Tess of the D'Urvervilles is one of my favorite novels of all time. Rich, complex, heartbreaking, and beautifully written.

This is one of the great English novels, probably among the first five in distinction among the novels of the late 19th century. It is certainly Hardy's most accomplished novel. "Tess" is set in Hardy's version of the Wessex region of England, where, for example, the city of Dorchester becomes Casterbridge. This is the story of Tess Durbeyfield. The Durbeyfields used to be known as the d'Urberviiles, centuries before, when they were rich and powerful. As with almost all of Hardy's novels, the evocation of the boggy hill country of southern England is so closely intertwined with nature, that one begins to smell the heady aromas of the countryside. Coincidentally, Roman Polanski's finest film is "Tess", Nastassia Kinski is the perfect Tess, Polanski shows usthe innocence of the girl, how its purity is the reason for her downfall. The scene in which she bites into a strawberry is the ultimate seduction scene for PG audiences.

"Tess of the D'Urbervilles" is Thomas Hardy's most famous protagonist and one of literature's most tragic heroines. At first, she reminded me very much of Ibsen's Nora, but as the book came to a close I came to realize that Tess is far more emotionally complex than Nora: much moodier, much prouder, much more romantic, and ultimately much more tragic. The story is pretty well-known to most people. Tess is a young beautiful maiden who has a lazy drunk for a father and a manipulative opportunist as a mother. At a young tender and naive age she is essentially raped by her well-to-do cousin, and it's a stigma that haunts her in the small-minded provincial town where she lives. She soon meets the man of her dreams, a clergyman's romantic son who finds a kindred soul in Tess, and while Tess does her best to maintain her distance eventually she gives way to her passion, and marries Angel Clare. Though she has lost her virginity to another man Tess remains pure and free, and against the warnings of her mother she forces herself to tell her new husband of her past. And because her husband is very young, very proud, and ultimately constricted and contained by the conservative pettiness of the people around him he decides to flee from Tess. And this sets the stage for Tess's ultimate downfall. The themes and plot of this novel have been copied copiously in Western culture, but what makes this novel such a masterpiece is the emotional force and beauty of Tess's characters, and it would be almost impossible for anyone else to replicate the sincere sympathy Hardy has for his most famous heroine. Literary critics can always point to the depth in meaning and symbolism of the novel -- the themes of innocence, spirituality, and romantic passion course wildly throughout the novel -- but it's Tess's sense and pursuit of love, her utter and pure and completion to the man she loves, that will continue to move readers for centuries to come.

I like Penguin Books for its supplemental background information and I also enjoy Thomas's Hardy nearly as much as any classical writer that I've read. This is the third Hardy book I've read. One of his books, Far From the Madding Crowd, I read recently, and another book, Jude the Obscure, I completed over thirty years ago. I'm excited about the fact that he has a supply that I can continue reading for the rest of my life. I plan to read at least two more of his books, the Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge, which will be all of his most popular novels for me, and then I will see how I feel about reading more than that.

Like Romeo and Juliet, this brings back memories of Mr. P's freshman English class. It now amazes me howmuch great literature we covered in those months. Like Brothers Karamazov, this drama is often used as anillustration in philosophical discussions. It is among the oldest works to deal with questions such as naturallaw, civil disobedience, conscience, family loyalty, civil authority and the higher law of the gods. My highschool teacher, although liberal in many respects, emphasized that Antigone has nothing to do with feminismas we now know it. It is an anachronism to import such readings into a classic text. Having said that, theremay be some students who have a prejudice against western civilization and the Greek classics. This mayhelp them to get started, because it is a positive portrayal of a female character. Antigone and her sisterIsmene are the daughters of the famous Oedipus. Although Antigone takes place after Oedipus Rex, it wasactually written before the "prequel". King Creon prohibited her brother from being buried. Out of dutyto the higher law of the gods and loyalty to family, she must bury her brother.

Buy the student edition! It is cheaper than the others and I bet it contains nearly all the same content. Easy to understand, thoughtful read, albeit a bit short. It contains some philosophical questions leaving the reader to answer. It moves at a good pace and is clear, there's not a whole lot of hidden messages. Although I purchased this for school, it is a play that I will probably re-read and "get something out of". The only thing is that the picture on the cover on my book is different from the one advertised, so -1 star for that. It's a good read for someone who is newly interested in plays and dramas.

Very useful prefatory comments and probably the English translation truest to the French original. This version maintains the ambiguity that Anouilh seems to have intended. It thus goes far beyond any simple celebration of "resistance," and leaves us with more questions than answers. Excellent book.

There are many ways you could analyze or interpret this book. I really enjoyed it especially since it is so old and we still have some of these same problems today. The use of dialogue is genius and the characters are amazingly well developed in this short play. I personally enjoyed the feminism and how misogyny was not favored by the masses. It was a well written piece and I only wish that we had been able to recover more of Sophocles works.

Easy read, the translation is simple enough to get through this in an hour. Read it for a class but would recommend the story overall.

I am familiar with the and partual to this drama, yet found the translation difficult. It it may be true to the original, but is far from our venecular.

Haha my 11 year old said to her sister, hey sisyour book anti- gone came in!

Kindle Version is awful. It formats everything so weird...and reformats it when you are looking for a specific line. You never know where you're at in the book.

#332,002 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm a 60-year-old with 40 years playing cowboy chords, and some knowledge of how to play "the scale" (index finger on the tonic of the sixth string). An 80 yo friend gave me a bass guitar Thanksgiving, and I have been having a ball. I asked another another friend for lessons, and got a Hal Leonard book.By week 3, I had jumped WAY ahead of myself and was trying to read about modes, asking why the harmony in 30's country was a given interval apart, whether you play a major or minor scale with the blues, and getting answers that I was unable to understand. I was very frustrated. After all, I still had never heard of pentatonic patterns, intervals, flat vs major 7ths... and when I did hear about something like a "perfect fifth", my brain would get stuck in why it's called a fifth, and what makes it perfect. (I found myself trying to read about Pythagoras late one night...)My wife found these podcasts and they were everything I needed: - A fundamental approach to the Theory of music, rather than a sheet of chords - Well paced - An Intellectually curious approach - Accurate and solid and deep - Serna tells what he's going to demonstrate, demonstrates it succinctly, then reviews what he just demonstrated - I know most of the songs he references well2 weeks in, I've purchased both Fretboard Theory books, one in paper and one on Kindle. I'm on podcast 12. And I'm boring everyone at parties telling them excitedly about all the magical things I've learned.Every day now I play my lovely bass and my new semi hollow body and my acoustic. But I can hardly hear the wonderful new sounds I'm making, for all the clicking in my head as everything falls into place.I've been a teacher all my life, so I can see appreciate Desi Serna's gifts as a teacher. Praise and thanks for this amazing guidebook into music theory.I just wish I lived in Nashville so I could come take lessons.

Bought this along with volume 1 (kindle versions). There are some typographical errors having to do with how only notes should be in uppercase bold typeface, but they are easy to read around. The same issue exists in volume 1, but no stars lost because the content is great.Compared with the first book, this one gave me a lot more work do to, but I was already familiar with some scale patterns . positions, chord shapes, and the most basic of theory concepts. This is the book that finally convinced me to get a looper pedal so that I can play over my own chord progressions to explore musicality of the guitar. I'm a long time player, but mostly approached the guitar as a technical challenge and lack a lot of theory concepts.Bottom line: Tons of value at the kindle price. I feel like I stole from the author, there is so much value here for me. Definitely recommend this and volume 2, only regret is that I didn't buy them sooner.

The Fretboard Theory Series, i.e. Vol I & Vol II along with all the DVDs that cover the chapters taught in these books have been for me the best instruction I've ever used for advancing in my guitar playing. Everything is presented in a way that makes it simple and easy to understand what seemed before to be so complicated. On the DVDs Desi is a great teacher and presenter and just working thru everything from the beginning (a couple of times) makes it much easier to get the technical ability in your fingers too. I highly recommend all of these materials for anyone who plays guitar but is plateaued and needs a kick-in-the-butt into a whole new level of understanding how it all works and ability to actually play it.

First I want to mention that I don't write reviews, however Fretboard Theory I and II are such quality learning materials and the BEST for learning the guitar and music theory for the guitar that I had to write this. I should mention that these books are "geared" towards the intermediate guitarist and Desi makes no secret about that. But there is good news, he has another book for beginners. That being said, here are some points I like to address:1. Modes - This is one of the most confusing and should I misunderstood things regarding this topic. I have other books and also videos from other publishers, however it is still "mystifying" to me. After going through Desi's explanation in Fretboard Theory I, I FULLY understand what modes are and how to apply them in a real musical setting. If you want to understand modes, do yourself a favor and buy his material!2. Connecting the Theory to songs - When reading and learning the material, he gives a list on songs which apply the material taught.3. Lead Patterns and Riff boxes - Explained in Fretboard Theory II, he explains and details application of the Pentatonic Patterns into lead patterns which many players used. In addition, he explains the concept of Riff Boxes. For the lead guitarist, this chapter is a MUST!I have spent YEARS studying theory and spent thousands of dollars on learning material. I wish I came across this earlier I would have save ALOT of time and money. As a developing guitarist, in my opinion, this is all you need!Lastly he has videos for fretboard theory I and II and have them both and recommend as well.

I started four years ago to improve my guitar playing. I started playing at about ten with my dad teaching me. He played country music very well but didn't read notation, more of put your finger here and do this. I am now 62 and enjoying learning all the things I passed over all these years. I especially wanted to learn music theory and one Tuesday night on Ustream with Steve Krenz live lessons I saw Desi Serna and Steve posted links to Desi's web site. I started with book one and now I'm on book two with the DVD's and all I can say is WOW, Desi makes it all so simple and the DVD's are great. I have a lot of practicing to do but I can say I now have a firm grasp of music theory thanks to Desi's teaching. Thanks Mr Serna for taking the time and effort to produce these wonderful teaching tools.

I love Ali Dean’s sports romances. It’s been that way since I read the first in her Pepper Jones series and walked away totally addicted both to the romance and the feeling of really being an insider on the sport (cross country in that case). That’s probably why I glommed on Black Diamond when I saw it. If anything this book was even better than the Pepper Jones books (a very high bar as those books are so superb that I’ve re-read that series several times). So much so that I’ve addictively binge read through Double Black and Black Ice too. Why? Because not only do we once again get so far into the head of a top athlete as to really feel like an insider in the sport itself, in this case skiing, but we also get high business intrigue and a real thriller of a suspense. Roxie and Ryker’s romance in Stark Springs Academy series is also simply beautifully done. The series has reached a logical stopping point at book 3, but I’m not going to call it a trilogy as I’m hoping for more (hey, there’s precedent here: the Pepper Jones stories reached logical stopping points at times but the author still found ways to continue the series with new novels that worked beautifully). But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - each of the books in this series definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that this series is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend each book.

Full Review available at [...]Ali Dean is one author that I have all her books on preorder, so this one was no different. When I read Black Diamond I was lost in so much of the terminology and lingo of skiers, but I think this go around I got a better grip on what they are referring too.Ryker and Roxanna (Roxie) are an item. It has only been a few days and things are already drastically changing. Those at the academy are noticing the shift in power of the “Pose” group (a.k.a the popular kids). Roxie has put her foot down on changes and Ryker is allowing them to happen no questions asked.Roxie and Ryker each have to go away for their respected competitions in Ski and Snowboarding. Her heading to Europe and his in Canada. Well things get a little rocky. Surprise after surprise starts coming to Roxie some being good and others being painful. How did I feel about this book? Hmmm…. I am a HUGE FAN of Ali Dean, so it is so hard to not like one of her books. This one there were just somethings I wasn’t a fan of. I honestly hope that Ali Dean (in the next book) gives us a chapter or 2 from the POV of Ryker. The guy makes no since to me. One minute he is a total douche and the next he is sweeping Roxie off her feet. The guy kind of gives me whiplash.Roxie is just as stubborn as she was in the first book. She was already pushing buttons with the school and those that conform to the system, but in this book she is now reorganizing everything. Many are happy about the change, but there are a few that are having a problem. Ryker has his own changes as well, regarding his father, the company, Petra’s parents, and his own adolescence. This is a guy that never got a real childhood. What I did like was, when Ryker made the choice (and announced) his decision about the Stark Inc., and the change in his demeanor. His personality and playfulness was more evident. Even with all the baggage, secrets, and responsibilities he has, Ryker still has positive attributes. We see him through Roxie’s eyes, and even though she is biased because of her affection for him, I think the guy will grow on me. By the end we discover one of the secrets he has been keeping, and let me tell you it is a crazy. There is always a villain or an antagonist and in this story that is no exception. Petra, the Stark’s female ski team captain, is Roxie’s enemy number one. She is conniving, but becomes desperate. Desperate people make poor choices and that is what happens to Petra. The story has some crazy parts. We have injuries, sabotages, and scandal. We are left on a mini cliff hanger. Not drastic enough to keep you up at night or to send desperate mail to Ali about when the next book to coming out, but it enough to want more.I will say I read and reread ALL the Pepper Jones series and some of those I prefer more than others and in this case that is no exception. I love Ali’s writing. I love how she use strong, independent athletic girls as her protagonist. I love the mix of mix of the athletic drive in her stories. So you are asking, should you buy this book?Yes.Why?Because regardless of character flaws of Rykerthere is many more positives. Also, its Ali Dean and I just love her writing. '

This was a great follow up to the first book. We finally see Ryker open up and Roxie is getting her moxie. I really enjoyed this book. I liked learning all of the skiing lingo. Made me respect professional skiers even more really.Watching how the social system change and evolve at a school like Stark was very interesting. But eventually I felt like it was boring. I felt like this series was more about Stark, how Ryker was shaped by it and how Roxie is trying to fit in. It's less about the relationship between the couple. But also about the people around them. This series feels a bit less personal than the Pepper series.Don't get me wrong. This is still a great series. It just seems a bit more like watching a TV show that you're 75% into. The other 25% would have made you sit on the edge, biting your nails, begging for the show to finish so you will know how it ends. This series is like that. The Pepper series had that 25%. You felt like you were actually friends with Pepper. Roxie and Ryker? Not so much.I have to admit though that I couldn't help, but worry about Roxie since certain people at the school went too far. That's the only time I truly cared about her which is messed up. This doesn't mean that I won't buy the third book. I will still buy it because Ali Den is an amazing writer and I'm kinda curious if the story gets more intense in the next one.

When I read this book, I thought it was a cross between mafia book and Tijan's Fallen Crest Series. Ryker being the hot tough guy, Roxie as the beautiful new girl, secrets that people want to remain hidden and all the drama makes this story so very intriguing. As soon as I finished this book I was already purchasing the next two books.

Rosie and Ryker are so cute together. They del like your average HS couple. I will say the I think Rosie expected to much too fast. The guy has a full plate and after being exclusive for a week she's expecting him to share all of his deepest secrets. I really like Ryker. He was trying so hard, and sacrificing so much. I'm not really sure as to what's left to happen in a 3rd book.

Great read! Plot is thin but it is rich in character development. Please write more as you've managed to capture/ enrapture my curiosity as to where (as far as their future careers n Stark) take them. I eagerly look forward to more of where the sports competition goes!

I think I liked this better than the first book. The characters seemed more real, and it seemed like there was more to this book than the first one. Great book, can't wait for the next one.
