To review for the math section of the GRE, I used this book as well as the Cliffsnotes Math Review for Standardized Tests, and the math review sections of the Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's general GRE review books. If I had to buy review materials again, I would purchase this book over the Cliffnotes book (although both were excellent) because it contains a few more math concepts and provides more challenging problems. In addition, I would purchase one of the general books in order to learn a few tricks or shortcuts for the math section, as this book contains how to do math problems "the long way".This book will give you the most thorough review of math concepts for the GRE. I was able to finish it in a month studying about three hours per day. The problems require you to think critically about the approach you want to take. I would say over half of them would be considered "hard" questions on the GRE.A hint for using this book: the introductory discussion about the topic in the beginning of each section will give you a starting point, but the real meat of the lesson is the explanations of each problem in the back of the chapter. The majority of my study time was spent analyzing the different approaches they showed in the answer key. If you only read the concept summary in the beginning, you are missing most of the lesson! If you are shooting for a score in the 85th percentile or above, I'd recommend this book. If below, I'd stick with Cliffnotes Math Review--this book will just frustrate you.

I bought this book as one of my final purchases for my GRE prep. It had been very highly rated and I needed a more intensive math review after purchasing GRE for Dummies, Cracking the GRE by Princeton and the Barrons 800 High Frequency Word List. The fact that the book separates the question levels of difficult is one of the better aspects of the book. The sheer number of questions to practice with is also very helpful. However, there are still numerous flaws that left me unsatisfied. I found the reviews of many concepts to be lackluster at best, giving questions in the medium or hard sections with no preemptive preparation in the review part of the section. Also, I found numerous questions to be tediously full of problems that need more time to work on than should be necessary for a GRE question. Also, I found the types of questions themselves, while helpful to concept practice, not at all written in the same manner as the GRE questions you can typically find in the PowerPrep or in a Princeton book. The math section on the GRE is all about tricks, traps and simple ways to solve problems. Many solutions offered in the answer sections provide complex if not completely unnecessary solutions - adding extra variables where no variable really need be added, for example. They show complex ways of solving QC problems with a D answer that need only basic logic to prove as a D.Lastly, I feel a math book for the GRE should be teaching you how to do the least amount of math in your 45 minutes and how to immediately spot a trap. This book only minimally mentions traps and tips to find them.

I purchased this book because of the excellent reviews, and after a week of using it, I understood the hype.To provide a bit of a back story, I took the GRE in 2011 using a Kaplan prep book, which I admit I thumbed through only a bit. I was a junior in college and took the GRE without a real motivating factor. I took it because I thought I should. My approach that year was the approach of many: how do I cheat the system? My lack of motivation and seriousness resulted in a less than stellar quant score. Today, two years later, I planned to actually RELEARN math principals. No "mastering" the test, I planned to master math as best I could. As the author suggests, this book has become my math bible over the past month. While I am keeping my expectations realistic (I don't expect to obtain a perfect quat score), I feel MUCH better prepared and confident to answer many of the questions the test will throw at me tomorrow afternoon. I bought this book along with the ETS guide, and the 5lb book of GRE practice problems. I have barely touched the other two (except to review the verbal and writing sections). This book has followed me to work, to the library, to the coffee shop, to my boyfriends... Here are some pros and cons about this book:Pros:- Sections by subject (e.g. geometry, coordinate geometry, exponents and roots, averages)- Each section has a comprehensive subject review written in a "need to know" and concise manner- Each section has formulas (e.g. circumstance, distance of a line, slope) in bold you can easily compile and memorize.- Each practice question's solution is explained in depth, and you will quickly learn that this book teaches you UNIVERSAL approaches to a verity of questions. You see that the GRE is much more about the approaches and skills you use to solve a problem, rather than very specific math knowledge.Cons:- You will need to warm up to the author's explanation of answers. If you haven't done math in awhile, you will likely have to refresh on common principals such as simplify and factoring equations. At first you might feel lost when reading answer explanations, and if you're like me, you may have to read them 5-10 times before you understand the logic. It is not uncommon for the author to leave out 1 or more steps. Don't worry, you will quickly learn the author's logic and this problem improves.Overall, excellent book that I plan to recommend to future GRE-ers!

Captain Fry conveys in plain English how you can "win" a war through mutual cultural respect as opposed to brute force. This is a wonderful recount of a commander that resided for nine months in what would to be known as the deadliest valley on Earth. Yet, somehow he manages to build/ improve a camp from nearly nothing, train several hundred Afghan soldiers and build their friendship and trust so much that they test his food for poisoning, all the while becoming the defacto American president of the valley regularly invited into the policy and situational decision making of the local leaders. I might add they departed their deployment without a single casualty. This book should be required reading for every military enlisted soldier, and anyone that assumes the only resolution to winning a war is seek and destroy.

John: I am sending along two books: “Hammerhead Six” and “Pale Horse.” Both about Afghanistan, the former is set in the Pech Valley in Kunar Province (NE Afghanistan) in 2003, and “Pale Horse” set in the same valley in 2009.Sadly, that’s the point. From 2003, to 2009, to today, nothing has changed. Nothing is different despite American dead, wounded, crippled or damaged, and despite billions of dollars spent on arms, fraud, and theft in “winning the hearts and minds” of Aghans. Afghanistan in 2017 is the same as Afghanistan in 2003. This was years of inexcusable, pointless waste and incomprehensible arrogance, at every level. That takes nothing away from the guys who wrote these two books. “Hammerhead Six” is about a Special Forces detachment from the Utah National Guard (!), most of whom are Mormons. They are sent out to set up an outpost (“Forward Operating Base Blessing”) in the heart of Indian Country. Viewed from close up, their story is interesting, nerve-wracking, and inspiring. These guys are trying to win the “hearts and minds” of the local Afghans. They did their best. Fry, the author, is blunt and straightforward about his time there. It is a good read.“Pale Horse” is written by an Army “lifer “ who commands an air cavalry squadron. They arrived in 2009 to fly helicopters in support of U.S. soldiers operating in the valley. The flying descriptions are outstanding, riveting; the bigger picture about the U.S. effort in Afghanistan gets in there too, although the colonel does not address it directly. This book is “technical,” as there is a lot of Army flying jargon, and acronyms. Being career military (different from the National Guard green berets, i.e. reservists like me), the author is not critical of the Army idiots who were running the war. The book does contain a fair description of the debacle known as Combat Outpost Keating (October 2009), in which 300+ mujis overran a thinly defended firebase way up the valley. The base was accessible (by Americans) only by helo. The author is careful not to malign the Army boobs who put this suicide firebase at the bottom of a valley, with no plan to occupy the hills that looked down on it. Evidently Army officers are trained differently than we, and terrain is not significant for them. You will gasp when you see the photos of Keating. The “Pale Horse” squadron evacuated the Keating base just before they rotated home. The U.S. abandoned Camp Blessing in 2010. I believe the last Americans were pulled out of the Pech Valley in 2010; it belongs to the Taliban now. “Hammerhead Six” and “Pale Horse” and all the rest were for naught.I am reading “the Last Punisher” now. Only about a third of the way through, but so far it is less interesting than “Hammerhead Six” and “Pale Horse.”

OK: Here's what this book isn't, and with utmost respect and admiration to those who have written and participated in such events: it is not an action packed, shoot'em up, low on ammunition but resilient determination and a bit of luck saved us as we completed the mission. Here's what it is: The story of an Army Special Forces (Green Beret) A-Detachment sent to the Kunar Valley in Afghanistan that conducted unconventional warfare and counter-insurgency operations against the Taliban.Counterinsurgency and unconventional warfare is the specialty of US Army Special Forces. Public perspective of Army Special Forces identity and their missions became somewhat diluted under the formation of “US Special Operations Command” in the 1980s. The Command was formed to organize and direct a wide range of missions in all service branches, including Army Special Forces.Although Army Special Forces training and tasking include direct action missions, Hammerhead Six was tasked with a mission to conduct counter insurgency. The team then occupied and built a base for operations in the remote, hostile Pech valley. They then assembled, fed, uniformed, armed, trained, paid and lead Afghans in conducting combat operations against the Taliban. In other words, the team not only led their Afghan force, they sustained them as well. For those who enjoy military history, Hammerhead Six's mission almost mirrors another US Army Special Forces mission published in Jan 1965 edition of National Geographic titled "American Special Forces in VietNam" (http://www.sfalx.com/h_national_geographic.htm), and the article published in slate.com titled 'The Snake-Eaters and the Yards".This book also has a unique perspective in the Special Operations war memoir genre. Most of the detachment members were in their late 20s, 30s and 40s and possessed college degrees and civilian job skills, as well as military operational experience. This book is not written from a religious perspective. There are several references made to Gospel Scripture that had varying degrees of influence in some of CPT Fry’s thoughts and decisions. But I could find no reason to hold these beliefs as a discriminator in the team's leadership or decision making.Holding their mission and story up against other stories in the OEF-OIF genre is trite. Their mission, manning and time period in GWOT was unique. I hold the highest respect for all who have served and sacrificed in the OEF-OIF and present conflicts, regardless of their branch of service or status of active duty, mobilized reserve or national guard.Hammerhead Six and its mission is a good example of mature, ethical conduct of a Special Forces A-Detachment in war, regardless of any team member's religious beliefs or National Guard background. All US Army Special Forces "18 series" soldiers, regardless or active or "part-time" guard affiliation, go to the same schoolhouse in Ft Bragg and undergo the exact same selection assessment and training. As a career soldier I have seen the "best" and "not so good" on both sides of the active duty-reserve/guard fence. Good training and good leadership is what makes good soldiers and good units, not just their full-time or part-time status. Hammerhead Six demonstrates this principle. It would be a disservice to the Army's professional military development and future Special Forces soldiers to devalue the team's experience and success based on such biases.
