I read this book purely for pleasure. Within my interests lies history, yet it is not a subject I have delved deeply into at any point in my life. This truly marked my first major personal attempt into learning more about history.I am glad this book was my first read into the past. The adventure that Columbus underwent and all the surrounding interactions he had in his world are so eloquently presented by the author. I highlighted countless words which I had never come across before. The vocabulary in this book is exceptional and can further anyone who wishes to improve it.I recommend this book to all I know. It's just as exciting to read as any popular video entertainment today. Get yourself 1/4 the way into this book and you will carry yourself to finish the epic journey.

Christopher Columbus has always interested me. Martin Dugard's book is written with the flair of a novel, but provides tremendous insight into the flawed genius of Christopher Columbus. I had little idea the magnitude of what he accomplished beyond his first voyage. One of the more interesting revelations of the book is when Mr. Dugard writes that Columbus, in his westward search for the orient, knew of the narrow isthmus of Panama and the great ocean (Pacific) beyond; he just had no means of exploring it.I highly recommend this book and others written by Martin Dugard. He has become an author I seek out.

It seems the stories of early exploration are at once both tragic and triumphant. Tragic in that they relate man's inhumanity to man. Triumphant in that they express the the ability of man to face and conquer the most adverse conditions of body and spirit. This book is a very impressive history of the four voyages of Columbus. Who knew such a story existed? Our school history books only drilled into us the 1492 story of the first voyage. One must read these exploration stories without judgement. For we cannot enter into the the historic psyche of the parties involved. We cannot judge the parties by our current sensibilities. In any case, Martin Dugard did a masterful job of bringing to the reader the awesome story of these early seafaring explorers, the sailing mastery of Columbus along with his human weaknesses, and a broad perspective of the world political scene that motivated the entire story. Excellent!Note: My Kindle version did not contain maps which would have been amazingly useful and added much to the story. I do not know if the print version has such maps.

What I like about Martin Dugard' s writing, is that he fills every page with interesting and well-researched information. I always come out with tons of new facts when I read his books. The other great thing is that his books move quickly with no dead spaces you have to wade through. This book is a prime example.I loved this book, and I learned amazing things about a complex man and his time in history. This is a book that everyone should read, and should be part of any history curriculum. Don't hesitate. Add it to your library.

I gained an appreciation for Columbus that I did not have before reading this book. His name usually evoked contempt and anger over the treatment of the natives of the lands Columbus visited or attempted to settle. I had no idea he was treated so badly by many of the Spaniards. This historical account of his fourth voyage was plagued with just about every misfortune imaginable, from a Sailor's perspective. It was a year-long nightmare of tragic events.I highly recommend the book. It's told using first-hand accounts using journal entries and other factual records.

Dugard is a fantastic writer. Although the beginning of the book begins slowly, the tale of the fourth voyage is one of the most thrilling adventures I ever read. The fact that this was a true story and not fiction makes the reader hold onto their armchair as Dugard's narrative reads beautifully and steers the reader along, and it does so as masterfully as the great Columbus himself, who tenaciously led his frightened men to the New World. And despite Columbus' later misfortunes during this fourth voyage, he was an extremely clever man with outstanding resolve that although never found that elusive passage to Asia did manage to return home safely after a nerve-racking series of disasters. That is astounding by any mortal's standards.I was glad to see that the History Channel made a movie on Dugard's book, as it is a crucial piece of history and an amazing story. Despite Columbus' failed mission he led his crew through, while even being deathly sick, to finally being rescued. That so many men did follow him, regardless of the mutiny, which was understandable at that crisis, it seems the main issue many others and I have is about Columbus being a tyrant. This whole issue truly needs factual evidence to prove that it was Columbus rather than his officers who committed those gross misdeeds on Hispaniola that tarnished Columbus' name, honor and right to govern. In comparison to King Ferdinand's Spain, which was entering its most ugly period of pogroms by first expelling the Muslims and currently on a mission to begin the Inquisition, Columbus appears to have been an angel. If harsh punishments were meted out on Hispaniola, it seems the evil King Ferdinand, who was killing people in mass, was no one to reprimand Columbus or his men for harsh treatment. Many factors indicate that the King's aim was to demote Columbus and his monopoly on the New World, which he and his evil bishop, Fonseca, managed to do. They were ruthlessly expelling Muslims and Jews, and Columbus was just another expendable victim added to the list. Hence, this vital information needs to be finally resolved by ALL historians writing about Columbus. However, this book is titled "The Last Voyage of Columbus", so I can't criticize Dugard too much in this regard, yet his storyline does address this previous issue, and therefore should to some extent. But as for the tantalizing fourth voyage, this is nothing short of extraordinary and almost too unreal to believe. This was a fascinating tale, written in a fascinating and engaging style. Bravo Dugard! And thanks for bequeathing to the world this great and important tale. A MUST READ!

Review

“As one of the few women to do this job, Addario has been able to convey to American readers the texture of life in places they might never otherwise see, entering secret women’s schools in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan or taking a portrait of a Congolese woman heavily pregnant by her rapist. Many of the resulting photographs—here accompanied by essays from Addario and other journalists she’s worked with—are distinguished by their combination of startling intimacy and narrative scope.” —Harper’s “Striking.”—Mother Jones“Spectacular…a majestic collection that captures the drama of everyday existence in war zones around the world. With chapters chronicling Afghanistan under Taliban rule, the refugee crisis and women in the military, the volume is a testament to the endurance of humanity…There is no disputing the impact of this revelatory collection.” –BookPage“This astonishing selection of photos from photojournalist Addario strongly demonstrates her conviction that by risking her life to cover gross injustices she can create visual and visceral proof of human rights violations . . . Addario’s photographs are stunning, and this book, which she dedicates to the ‘brave and resilient’ women and men she’s documented, provides unique insight into the vital work of photojournalists.”  — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Lyndsey is an incredible speaker and very inspiring, I was fortunate enough to meet her and hear her story in Boston while she was on tour for this book. This is our new coffee table book and everyone that comes over is so impressed with her work. I have a friend that looks up to her as an icon in photo journalism. To see what she has witnessed as she takes you through her journey in this book is very moving. Great book a must have!

So good. The stories and photos transport you to where and what she was witnessing in the most unfortunate 10% of the world we so often forget.

If you read It’s What I Do- this book is a must have, it takes you on the same personal journey but as a visual narrative. The images are as poignant and powerful as the stories behind them. Beautifully designed and printed, its a must have for anyone with a passion for photography

The first book was exceptional...inspiring. This book is a re-hash of what took place 5-10 years ago, predominated by photographs with little new narrative. Disappointing.

A very powerful book. Not for the weak at heart to go through. But also shows what is really happening in this world. She must be a strong photojournalist.

A beautiful book, and a great companion to her memoir.

loved this book. i read her memoir and I love contrasting the two. This book augments her memoir but reading her previous book isn't necessary to appreciate this work of art.

I’m a fan. Live her balls

Death in Holy Orders (Adam Dalgliesh Mystery Series #11), by P. D. James

Amazon.com Review

Despite challenges from Ruth Rendell and (more recently) Minette Walters, P.D. James's position as Britain's Queen of Crime remains largely unassailable. Although a certain reaction has set in to her reputation (and there are those who claim her poetry-loving copper Adam Dalgliesh doesn't correspond to any of his counterparts in the real world), her detractors can scarcely deny her astonishing literary gifts. More than any other writer, she has elevated the detective story into the realms of literature, with the psychology of the characters treated in the most complex and authoritative fashion. Her plots, too, are full of intriguing detail and studed with brilliantly observed character studies. Who cares if Dalgliesh belongs more in the pages of a book than poking around a graffiti-scrawled council estate? As a policeman, he is considerably more plausible than Doyle's Holmes, and that's never stopped us loving the Baker Street sleuth. Death in Holy Orders represents something of a challenge from James to her critics, taking on all the contentious elements and rigorously reinvigorating them. She had admitted that she was finding it increasingly difficult to find new plots for Dalgliesh, and the locale here (a theological college on a lonely stretch of the East Anglian coast) turns out to be an inspired choice. We're presented with the enclosed setting so beloved of golden age detective writers, and James is able to incorporate her theological interests seamlessly into the plot (but never in any doctrinaire way; the nonbeliever is never uncomfortable). The body of a student at the college is found on the shore, suffocated by a fall of sand. Dalgliesh is called upon to reexamine the verdict of accidental death (which the student's father would not accept). Having visited the College of St. Anselm in his boyhood, he finds the investigation has a strong nostalgic aspect for him. But that is soon overtaken by the realization that he has encountered the most horrific case of his career, and another visitor to the college dies a horrible death. As an exploration of evil--and as a piece of highly distinctive crime writing--this is James at her nonpareil best. Dalgliesh, too, is rendered with new dimensions of psychological complexity. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly

Baroness James may have turned 80, but neither she nor her dogged Scotland Yard detective Commander Adam Dalgliesh (last seen in 1997's A Certain Justice) shows any sign of flagging in this superb whodunit, with its extraordinarily complex and nuanced plot and large cast of credible characters. When the body of a young ordinand, Ronald Treeves, turns up buried in a sandy bank on the Suffolk coast near isolated St. Anselm's, a High Anglican theological college, it's unclear whether his death was an accident, suicide or murder. The mystery deepens a few days later when someone suffocates Margaret Munroe, a retired nurse with a bad heart, because she remembers an event 12 years earlier that could have some bearing on whatever's amiss at St. Anselm's. Enter Dalgliesh at the behest of Ronald's father, Sir Alred, who's received an anonymous note suggesting foul play in his son's death. It isn't long before another death occurs, and this time it's clearly murder: late one night in the chapel, somebody bashes in the head of Archdeacon Crampton, a hard-nosed outsider who wanted to close St. Anselm's. Dalgliesh and his investigative team examine the complicated motives of a host of suspects resident at the college, mostly ordinands and priests, slowly unveiling the connections among the various deaths. Illegitimacy, incest, a secret marriage, a missing cloak and a valuable altar triptych are just some of the ingredients in a case as contrived as any Golden Age classic but presented with such masterful ease and conviction that even the most skeptical readers will suspend disbelief. This is a natural for PBS Mystery adaptation. (Apr. 19)Forecast: With a 300,000-copy first printing, this BOMC main selection is sure to race up the bestseller lists.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

#742,945 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This was my return to reading P.D. James after a hiatus of a few years. I was reminded, again, of how I have to run to the dictionary to understand some British terms that I am unfamiliar with. Had most fun looking for the definition of a "mere" and then realizing we had several "mere's" around my grandfather's property in New England. I have traveled to Great Britain twice and always look for similar settings of what I read even if fictitious. It takes me a while to comprehend how this story develops. Sometimes I found myself having to go back to remind myself of earlier described individuals. It's my problem but I always feel that I owe it to the writer to get a complete understanding of the work. I quickly became a member of the community and a sleuth with Adam Dagliesh in developing theories about who murdered whom in this world of priests, visiting instructors and students of ordination in a somewhat deserted area of the English coast. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was made into a PBS series in 2004. Of course I sent for it.

P. D. James and Inspector Dalgliesh never fail to please. This book provides both a look into the inspector's past and an introduction to his romantic future with Emma. Although her books generally start slowly, we stick with Ms. James because we care about the characters she creates -- from the inspector and his team to the victim and the characters involved in and around the crime. Since the setting is a seminary, the situation is handled with care and grace. We see both the humanity and the human-ness of the characters. Yet another good read from P. D. James.

PD James never fails to deliver a wonderful read! Inspector Dalgleish is an interesting combination of thoughtful reasoning and poignant nostalgia. In this book, the priests and the ordinands are each unique one from the other, and the High Church order is a character by itself. I especially loved the character of the wise and gentle Father Martin.

A truly excellent book. A "locked room" (really, locked Abbey) mystery, where many of the suspects are so completely naive (High Anglican priests at a tiny theological college) they are less than unhelpful. And it includes one woman I can only class as evil. I enjoyed it much more than other James I've read recently. My only quibble would be that the climax was overdone, but I understand why it was done that way.

As a confirmed P.D.James junkie I am a little biased, but I found this novel totally satisfying. In the great tradition of Dame Agatha Christie the setting is rural England, the character development is deft and a plot with many twists and turns. All together a an entertaining read by a master at her trade.

The setting is from AD's youth. The plot involves one important figure from that time and a spectrum of characters from the holy to the incestuous. One attracts AD whose heart has been barren since the death of his wife. The motive is a bit muddy. But AD and his team work through the evidence. If a few of the suspects had simply been up front, the story would need only 20 pages.

A second reading was an absolute delight. James and Dalgliesh are still my favorites. This is more than recreational reading. I paused many times to consider the nature of today's world, the theological questions posed, and the many forms of love experienced by the characters. Once again James has touched upon the questions that guide me through introspection and the many changes within my own heart over the years.I love sitting by the fire with her. I find it a joy to enter into suchdelightful discussions where I find her insights so thought provoking and affirming.'A very good read!

P.D. James is a proven author of detective fiction and Dalglish a familiar detective. I found this novel to lack heart. There was no sense of depth to Dalglish and, in fact, the secondary characters were more fully developed. The detective was a tool used to move the plot forward, not a person the reader cares about. The setting was well drawn and the crime complex. I almost gave it 4 stars, but the weak character development held it back and weighed it down

Standing Alone in Mecca: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam

From Publishers Weekly

A former Wall Street Journal reporter, Nomani has invented her own nonfiction genre: gender-sensitive Muslim travel writing. An excellent companion to Nomani's first book, Tantrika, this memoir treads similar ground, chronicling her pilgrimage to Mecca, or hajj, in 2003. Throughout the book, Nomani is filled with self-doubt and healthy frustration with her Islamic faith. The portions describing hajj, particularly the other pilgrims' warmth to her infant son, are original and enjoyable. [...] The second half of the book records Nomani's pioneering struggle at her mosque for equal treatment of women. Daring to enter the men's door at the mosque, Nomani is repeatedly ostracized, and her father—a founder of the mosque—vilified by his counterparts. Nomani decries the Wahhabi takeover of American mosques and demands reform—a call that will resonate with the average American Muslim. The stories of her preteen niece and nephew introduce readers to a new generation of Muslims who are American and equality-minded. Through memorable personal narrative, Nomani gently instructs readers about modern Islam and her role as a woman within it. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Even as she struggled to reconcile her quest for love and equality with her desire to be a good Muslim, Nomani never intended to become an activist dedicated to freeing Islam from the ideologies of misogyny and hate. But she had traveled the world as a Wall Street Journal correspondent, stood by helplessly while her close friend and colleague, Daniel Pearl, was murdered in the name of Allah, and then became a single mother, thus a criminal in the eyes of conservative Muslims. Determined to find the true spirit of Islam, Nomani travels to Mecca on the holiest of pilgrimages, the hajj, a life-changing experience she chronicles with compelling detail, candor, and passion both intellectual and spiritual as she also explicates Islam's intrinsic respect for women as embodied in such figures as Hajar (known as Hagar to Jews and Christians). Inspired by her discoveries, Nomani returns home to Morgantown, West Virginia, and courageously launches a protest against her mosque's sexist policies, an effort that, thanks to her resounding eloquence and investigative expertise, has had global consequences. Ultimately, Nomani's riveting, cogent, and inspiriting account urges the moderate majority in all faiths to rescue their traditions from those who twist religion into a weapon of mass oppression and terror. Standing Alone, by Asra Nomani, is about reforming Islam, and fortunately, despite the title, Ms. Nomani does not stand alone. Many other Muslims stand beside her. And non-Muslims, such as I, who wish to see a reformed (restored) Islam, stand with her also. Why should I care? Because I lived in Saudi Arabia for several years, and wrote a book, Fool's Paradise (travels in Arabia). In that book I note that Islam today has as little to do with its prophet, Mohammed, as Christianity has to do with Jesus. Neither man would recognize the religions which are practiced in their names. And in that book I identify modern Islam's major flaw: its fear of women's sexuality. Why does a Saudi woman, e.g., have to be accompanied by a male relative everywhere she goes? Why is she not allowed to drive a car? It's because she might drive that car to a sexual tryst. Fear of not being able to control women is at the heart of the Islam practiced in Arabia today. Such fear, by the way, does not speak well for the masculinity of the males guarding their females. If a man can't trust his wife as soon as his back is turned, what kind of man is he? This kind of Islam puts a kind of social chastity belt on its women. They are so tabooed and bugabooed that when you visit a man in Saudi Arabia, you will never see the womenfolk in his household. If they do speak, it will be from behind a curtain. There are religious police in the market (souk) to make sure women are veiled, and if too much of her leg is showing, he will swipe it with a black mark. To a Westerner, all this seems like lunacy. So it would have for the first Muslims, also. The reformation of the Islam that has been hijacked by a fearful patriarchy will most likely come from Muslims such as Nomani, raised in liberal, Jeffersonian America. Throughout her book, Nomani stresses that the early Muslims and their Prophet did not treat women as second-class citizens. Women preached in mosques. They were valued, not feared. Ms. Nomani goes to Mecca on the Haj (pilgrimage) where every Muslim should go if financially and physically able. Ironically, in Mecca during the Haj, men and women mixed freely, unsegregated. Elated by this discovery, which hearkened back to original Islam, she hoped to reform the local mosque in West Virginia, where she grew up and still lives. That local mosque had a separate entrance for females, and once inside, the women had to sit in a squalid area behind a screen. Why? Because a Muslim male should not see a female, lest he be distracted and tempted by her. Asra Nomani is determined to be allowed to go into the mosque through the same door as the men, and determined to pray in the same room as the men, albeit a little behind them in token of modesty. The book is well-written, informative, never boring, and should be read by every American who has been led by enemies of Islam in MSM to fear and distrust it. Islam does need reform (restoration). Asra Nomani shows the way.

This book contains a very complete description of the haji (pilgrimage) plus lots of andedotal stories of modern day Muslim life in America. The author can be perceived as quite liberal for her faith, but she has a clear way of explaining much of what is hidden of the Muslim faith by the fanatics and the superficial news broadcasts seen in the US.It does seem that she is hung up on the fact that she had her child out of wedlock and how some would want to punish that as a moral sin. Apparently it's quite an emotional issue as it is REPEATEDLY mentioned - a tad overkill for me. But overall it was an excellent book and easy read.

Do not be misled by the title of Standing Alone in Mecca . . . because it speaks not about Islam or even religion but for the eternal human search for liberty, fairness and justice. Her expose of Islam is the expose of abuse that every religion has gone through at the hands of dogmatic zealots. It is the story of human propensity to leverage any and all means of power--religion, politics, money--to control others. The author's journey to Mecca is a fascinating account of the pilgrim that only Muslims are allowed to go to. Other religions have been guilty of this exclusion as well, to be fair. While feeling guilty of bringing a child to the world out of wedlock, Asara ends up in Mecca to seek redemption, and finds a surprise."After undergoing the most sacred of experiences as a Muslim woman in one of the most repressive regimes in the world, I received a shocking wakeup call when I tried to bring lessons from the pilgrimage home to my own community in America--one of the most democratic societies in the world."She found that "In my mosque, what was alarming was not that this man, living with two Saudi wives in Morgantown, spewed this hate-filled rhetoric just blocks from the campus of West Virginia university, but that none of the 150 WVU doctors, professionals, PhD students, and undergraduate students in the congregation uttered a protest. From the trenches in small-town Americana, I was observing something disturbing. Even at a time when the government of Saudi Arabia was taking a moderate position--at least publicly--tolerant and inclusive Islam was losing in places like Morgantown as zealots filled a vacuum created by an ambivalent moderate majority and a passive, even sympathetic, leadership."Let me repeat for clarity that the men who schemed in the name or religion to ostracize Asra from the mosque that her father had founded are not the exclusive domain of Islam. Such bigotry runs across all cultures and religions. This book is a bold attack on such behavior and not on a religion. Asra chose to face these and other discriminations as a thinking, courageous speaker of truth, supported by like-minded courageous and thinking Muslim men and women. To me, this was the best part of the book. Moderate, fair-minded people must speak out or lose to the tyrant minority, be it Hitler, Khomeini, Putin, or others like them.

What a good read. I have tried to convince anyone who will listen that the Koran is not violent nor does it degrade women. The same for early application of Islam. But whole societies within countries and entire countries that apply Islam falsely make modern Islam hard to embrace. Asra Nomani presents this point in her wonderful read.

This is something everyone should read, no question. Nomani has such a gift for opening the hearts of her readers unbeknownst to them. You find yourself looking at people differently and realizing that everyone is the same the world over, no matter the religion or culture. It isn't just that, though. It's a gift to be going along with her on her journey, and learn as she learns, though her knowledge is vast already. But it's now just about her journey, it's also about where things went drastically wrong in the middle east, our part in it, and what is causing so much strife now. If you are wanting to understand the heart of Islam, the history and present, this is a great place to start.

I wanted to know who was actually the father and what the baby was.Meeting Noble Shaw...Johnni SherriI'm so glad that everything worked out for Noble and Imani in the end. I was blown away with why Monica was stealing money from Noble to help Kelldon payback a loan shark that he had gotten mixed up with. Ms. Charlene and that strawberry cheesecake wasn't no joke. I love how she took to Imani from the beginning. Alex is disfigured and now being blackmailed by Detective Loweman who's actually Nataleigh's fiance. It was soooooooo funny how Dwyane sent Alex to Hawaii thinking she was about to share Dewayne and Legacy's honeymoon but he had Nataleigh, the wedding planner, to book them a trip to Paris. It's sad that Alex ran her and Dewayne off the road and hitting a tree, killing him, because he didn't want her anymore and wasn't going to divorce Legacy taking half of her money. It was Legacy's brother, Pastor Al, prayers that kept Legacy covered. I can't wait until Legacy finds out the truth about Alex and Dewayne. I'm glad that Legacy's baby is actually Xavier/Southern Boy son. I want them back together and I feel like he would've stopped the wedding if Alex would've had him fake arrested. I can't wait to see what happens next in BGC4😍😘

I really love short novellas so these Chronicles were very appealing to me. I'll never look at bearded men in the same way. Meeting a bearded Man that is awesome in more ways than just that sexy beard, would surely be a rare opportunity. After reading this trilogy, it's no way that I would not take advantage of a chance to get to know a unique and surely interesting bearded individual. These Chronicles are exotic and not for the innocent. That being said. I'm grown and I gave myself self permission read and enjoy. Thank You Blake Karrington and other the other storytellers that participated in the production is these 3 books. Kudos!

I really enjoyed these stories and the authors did a good job bringing these characters to life. My favorite was Meeting Noble Shaw. I was feeling him and Imani's story and I liked how it ended. When I first started reading Beard Gang Chronicles I thought I'd be stuck looking for the rest of these stories but each Chronicle continued the stories where they left off. I'm gonna be on the lookout for Beard Gang Chronicles 4 because some of the stories are still going. If you're a fan of the erotic, you'll enjoy reading Beard Gang Chronicles.

Imani and Noble 😍😍😍 I was hoping the baby was not his but I’m happy they worked it and continued to be family. Killa is the new bae that story got me so hot and steamy. I’m so mad legacy is not swing the truth for who that man supposed to be and hopefully she actually that baby and not let the public opinion destroy that baby childhood. Hopefully Xavier will be in his live.

Man, these men were something else. Romello had Jada smitten. Killa/Justin had all the women sprung and losing their minds. Nero was just crazy. But my man, Noble Shaw was everything! I hate that Dwayne was killed before all the secrets were exposed, but I would like to read more about Legacy and Xavier. Great book!!

Because the stories were so captivating I read all out of order. I thought I loved Mr. Noble's story until Xavier & Legacy hit the scene. When will book 4 be released or do they continue in a book of their own. Don't leave me hanging!!I did 3 books in 3 days you guys are awesome☺️

Great book couldn't put it down. So glad we got a happy ending for Noble. I can't believe I have to wait again for beard gang. That cliffhanger had me heated because I want to know how is Xavier going to act when he finds out about his son with Legacy? Great book loved all the stories.
